Adam Lambert booked on The View
The on-again, off-again love affair between ABC and American Idol star Adam Lambert is making my head spin. In the past week or so, still stinging over Lambert's over the top performance at the American Music Awards, ABC dropped Adam Lambert appearances on Good Morning American, Jimmy Kimmel Live and New Year's Rockin' Eve. Adam absolved ABC of responsibility for the cancellations. He Tweeted that it was pressure from the FCC. Then the folks at GLAAD weighed in, coming to Adam's defense. That was followed by the announcement that Adam is now set to appear on ABC's The View on Thursday, December 10. He'll also be on Barbara Walters' Most Fascinating People special on December 9.
You see why my head is spinning? Has Adam been welcomed back or is ABC just trying to placate GLAAD? Hollywood Reporter points out that The View is taped, so if Adam grinds too much or simulates anything sexually off the chart, they can cut the tape. On GMA and NYRE he would have been singing live and the censors wouldn't have been able to control him.
The way I see it, Adam Lambert has achieved his objective. The AMA show labeled him as a dangerous act. This is classic Madonna marketing. Do something shocking and get your CD promoted up the wazoo. Michael Jackson did the same thing in music videos -- grabbing his crotch and destroying a car.
I'm not saying that Adam's AMA performance was appropriate or acceptable for primetime TV. It was outrageous. But now that he's gotten the attention he sought, I don't think future performances will be nearly as outre.
