Review: Desperate Housewives - Boom Crunch

Desperate Housewives
(S06E10) "Your mom needs help, and so does Mike." - Susan to Dylan

There we go, dear TV Squad readers, a few of our wishes and theories concerning Desperate Housewives have come true this week in the Christmas-themed installment of the show. I mentioned a few weeks back that I wanted Dylan, Katherine's daughter, to come back to Wisteria Lane and help her mother, and it came true. And two weeks ago, a few of you predicted the accurate turn of events concerning Katherine's stabbing.

But Katherine's crazy storyline wasn't the important event of the last episode of 2009. As teased for weeks, the lives of the Wisteria Lane citizens were rocked by a boom and a crunch.

Before I comment on the crash, let's deal with the other storylines:

  • Crazy Katherine: Dylan was finally called to Wisteria Lane to give her mother a much needed reality check. I was a tad surprised by the fact that Katherine told her daughter that she (Kat) was married to Mike and that Susan was of the stalking and stabbing kind. However, it quickly made sense to me that Kat would try to live her dream life through her phone chats with her daughter. Even if Katherine was in crazy mode, she was definitely sane deep down inside, as she knew that if Dylan came to see her, everything would crash and burn. I wonder if Katherine will end up in the same loony bin as Dave. After all, Marc Cherry did say that he would love to bring Dave back in somehow.
  • The Scavos vs the Solises: The war is still on even if Lynette tried to apologize and even if Bree ordered Gaby and Lynette to make up. However, as some of you posted in comments to my last review, they will more than likely be friends again due to the tragedy that happened this week.
  • The Love Triangle: Can you believe that Orson has been bluffing all these months?! He was even way too peaceful when Bree handed him the divorce papers and told him she had been seeing someone. I expected a scene from Orson at that point. Of course, I was rewarded later in the episode when Karl had to tell Orson that he, Karl, was Bree's boyfriend and that he was about to propose. Orson took it out on Karl, and I wouldn't be surprised if Karl ends up being one of the dead ones. This could lead to a new murder mystery ... What if Orson was so enraged that he killed Karl during their fight? Karl's death would be rule as accidental at first due to the plane crashing in. But if the morgue staff investigates a bit further, they could discover he died before the crash ... Even if I don't want Karl to die since I'm a Karl/Bree shipper, I must say that a Karl murder mystery could be interesting for a few weeks.
  • The Bolens: We didn't learn much more about what Angie did except that it happened 18 years ago and that it goes along with the word "terrorist." No matter, their storyline got crunchier when nurse Mona learned the truth and decided to blackmail them. Lucky for the Bolens, it looks like the plane crash will allow them to stay a tad longer on Wisteria Lane.

Let's talk "boom" and "crunch". The way the plane crashed, it's more than likely that a few people, besides the pilot (played by The Simpsons' Dan Castellaneta) and probably his wife, died. Rumors in the past week said that three people would die during this dramatic event.

My predictions are: Karl, Celia, Mona

  • I don't want Karl to die but, as I've pointed out before, his death could bring a new mystery to Wisteria Lane.
  • A few years ago, spoilers sources claimed that Marc Cherry was toying with the idea of killing one of the show's kids -- back then, the twins were rumored as being killed off -- to have a storyline where a family would have to cope with the death of a child. Having Celia die would offer Cherry such an opportunity. Also, Celia has been extremely underused on the show, so this death would allow the writers to get rid of a character they don't know how to handle.
  • It's best that Mona dies since she knows everything about the Bolens and we can't have them be arrested just yet. That's stuff for February Sweeps if not May Sweeps.

Do you agree with my predictions or do you think other people will die? Share your theories in comments below.

The next new episode should air on January 3rd.

I read somewhere that there would be 5 deads in this episodes, and I have them:
*Mona: seems pretty obvious
*Karl: spoilers say that
*Bob: We saw Bob seconds befor the plane crash, and then all the "Lee watching the plane with a face of horror" thing.
*The couple from the plane
There you go, the five ones.

I wish Karl could be in the show 4ever, or at least 'till we hate him, cuz right now I am loving him and Bree/Karl couple so deeply!!!!

To be honest, the dead guy has to be Karl. Karl/Bree would never last and nobody wants Bree to go through single-dating again (that kind of ruined her for season 2). Also, if you noticed, they've been trying to do recon for how they handled Orson at the end of season 5. I honestly thought Orson was done for when season 6 started because I didn't think he could become good again after going crazy with Bree, but they've been doing it these past few episodes. And, sorry, Bree/Orson > Bree/Karl. I thought the affair storyline would be horrible when last season ended (Bree just doesn't seem that type), but they made that work pretty well. They also made the Bree-businesswoman storyline work the season before, which I was also skeptical about. Just reflecting on how storylines I thought would be bad turned around.

As for Katherine, she hasn't really annoyed me like she has everyone else. It's been vaguely entertaining and a good distraction for the first half of the season. Frankly, I felt sorry for her when she was being restrained. Didn't see that emotion coming. Having her daughter come back helped do it, I think.

I was actually disappointed with this episode, considering it wasn't very dramatic. I think the only disaster episode that's worked for DH was season 3's Bang. All the other ones seem to follow a specific formula (they all have mini-characters who threaten the mystery character get killed--Filion's mistress S4, Dave's psychiatrist S5, and now Angie's blackmailer). I personally think the only think Karl will die (besides minor characters nobody cares about) and Lynette will lose the babies. That way, they get all the drama with the baby storyline without the consequences (birth/rearing).

I really had been hoping they would take their edge back and threaten someone who really matters, like Mrs. McCluskey, Mike or one of the children (Scavos or Solises).

I am so glad that katherine has finally been put into place. Oh my goodness she was bugging me so badly. I can't believe it took them this long to lock her away. As for the deaths. I think that mona was definitely killed by the plane first because they wouldn't want the Bolen's story out yet. though coming up with 67000 dollars would be a good story. And i don't agree about Celia, I think lynette and celia got out of the way in time but I do think that she loses the twins. That will give her and gaby something to talk about. And Im torn between karl and orson. I want to say orson dies just to get him out of the picture but something tells me Karl does, only because that would create way more mystery than Orson dying.

I know (hope) Bree doesn't die! but im pretty sure she wont b/c her hand was out the window (it was wayyy to femine to be a man's ) their wanting you to think shes dead but either Karl or Orson is. im a Karl fan but im thinking he might be the one thats dead. I really don't care as long as Lynette and Bree are okay (and the other housewives of course , their just mi favs)

I read somewhere in some blog I ran across that there is a child going to be killed off from the plane crash....a twin, one of lynette's unborn twins.

Lynette didn't throw herself on Celia, she ran to her, grabbed her and it looked like they both got out of the way in time.

Katherine was bugging me, so I am glad to see some sort of resolution to her story.

how can you not mention Caroline Aaron as the wife, and foil, of Dan Castellaneta?!

Kris, I didn't mean to imply that Lynette needs to be forgiven as I agree she truly is the injured party. I just meant that her action protecting Celia would wake Gabby and Carlos up to the fact that they're friends with Lynette (anf maybe that they've been jerks.)

Sorry that I came on kind of strong. I can't wait until Gaby and Carlos eventually have to eat crow and apologise to Lynette. That will be a great change because I'm actually very tired of Lynette always being the one to apologise and take responsibility when someone else is just as at fault or even much more at fault (like Carlos and Gaby). Sometimes I feel like she has a whipping girl tatoo across her forehead.

I don't think Celia dies, I think Lynnette throwing herself over Celia would have protected her which gives her absolution from Gabby and Carlos for her previous sins and ends the feud. It may, however, mean Lynnette loses the twins.

Good theory on Orson killing Karl but that will make me sad...I think instead it is Orson dead and possibly Karl that will have suspicion thrown at him.

The other person is Mona, the most obvious.

So, my predictions:
- Lynette's twins
- Orson
- Mona

I'm at a loss why Lynette would need absolution. Frankly, I wanted to smack her everytime she apologised because she was the one who should have been apologised to.
