"I never, ever had problems with anger," he said, "no domestic violence with any of my past."
While Brown says that he's never been guilty of committing prior domestic violence, he does claim to have seen it first-hand.
In 2007, Brown told Tyra Banks about witnessing his mother's abuse by his stepfather, and how it changed the way he dealt with women. "It affected me ... especially towards women, I treat them differently ... because I don't want to ... put a woman through the same thing that person but my mom through," said Brown.
However, he admits that the abuse of his mother, which his stepfather has denied, didn't factor into his mind when he beat Rihanna while the two sat in his car. "It's just something that I have to be responsible for," he said.
"I think, just being ... criticized and scrutinized by a lot people, and just being able to see who I am as a person, it's just shaped me to be a ... stronger and better young black man," Brown said, indicating that the experience, and resulting public scrutiny, has nevertheless had a positive affect on him.
