Kelly Ripa Shocked at Bryant Gumbel's Lung Cancer Battle on 'Live with Regis and Kelly' (VIDEO)

While filling in for Regis Philbin for a second day in row yesterday as guest co-host on 'Live with Regis and Kelly,' Bryant Gumbel dropped a surprise bombshell and announced a past battle with cancer.

"Two months ago I had cancer surgery. They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung, and they took some other goodies," Gumbel said. "The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment. I went through that and it's done now. And we hope ... we hope ... it's over and done."

Gumbel told viewers he intentionally kept the news private and only notified his family. Even the staff at his show 'Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel' didn't know about his surgery and cancer scare.

Gumbel has plans to meet with his surgeon and oncologist next week and hopes to be given a clean bill of health soon so that he can resume activities such as golfing.
