Review: Better Off Ted - Love Blurts

Great. Now I'm gonna be picturing Ted as "Aquated" for the next few days. (Surprise! He looks good in aquatights!)

Phil and Lem's hilarious superhero fantasy was only a tiny throwaway gag in a premiere full of wonderfully weird moments and plotlines. There was Ted's fake obsession with Utah, Veronica's real obsession with Utah, and Taye Diggs' obsession with dressing up like a bear and terrorizing innocent park dwellers. What's say we start off by discussing that last one?

At this point, I'm convinced that Diggs' contract with ABC says that he gets to appear on all of the network's shows. (I can't wait to see him on General Hospital.) I'm not complaining, though. The guy really knows how to deliver the funny (and the crazy). At first I thought his character was going to end up being Ted's bland and handsome rival for Linda's affections. Thankfully, the writers had something far more insane in mind. Hearing Diggs confess his secret to Linda – on their first date! – reminded me of why I love this show so much: It's just so damn bizarre! But Better Off Ted rarely feels like it's actually trying to be weird. Like Diggs, the show makes crazy look easy.

So the company decided to match people up with their perfect genetic partners to reduce insurance costs? Sounds like classic Veridian to me. It was hard to believe that Ted and Linda were "incompatible," especially when Ted's number one match turned out to be a Linda clone. Seriously. She was blonde, beautiful, witty, charming, a little geeky and totally smitten with Ted -- just like Linda. Well, whatever. I liked the strange twist their relationship took after Ted – who's really just desperate for some companionship at this point – blurted out "I love you" after a quick roll in the hay. And leave it to Linda to exploit Ted's little lie just to see him squirm.

Phil and Lem mostly played outfield tonight, as is sometimes the case. These two are at their best when they're in conflict with each other, or when they're working together on one of the company's more frightening projects. Sadly, their plotlines sorta took them in different directions. Lem tried to save his sperm from Veronica's clutches while Phil was bummed about his demeaned genes. But the two stories finally converged in a great scene with Veronica threatening to go "balls out crazy" on a medical clerk. (Sadly, she was only bluffing.)

I was disappointed that this ep didn't feature a Veridian commercial. Maybe there was a time issue. (Or maybe ABC thinks the faux ads confuse the audience?) Whatever the case, I've been assured that the next episode does have a commercial, so we can rest easy for now.

This was a good start. I'm looking forward to enjoying another season of one of ABC's best and kookiest comedies. Oh, one last thing ... do you think Ted's Indian language could be the next Klingon?

The guy who plays Ted said that it was a real native language. One of the lines was thanking the tribe for allowing them to use the language.

Don't quote me, but I think it was Lakota.

Last year, I must have gone 2-3 episodes fast forwarding through those commercials not realizing they were part of the show. Went back and re-watched and have been hooked ever since.

I laughed non-stop the episode, even during the commercials, remembering the crazy-ass lines, like "go balls-out crazy" and dressing up as the bear. and Phil's family being used as screaming cannonballs, and the Gaelic word for his last name means "turd." Haha. Love it so much. I, too, was disappointed to see no commercial because I look forward to those the most, as they are so hilarious.

I have loved this show since the very first episode, and I am so happy it has been renewed. Hopefully ABC will move it to the 8 pm time slot on Wednesday to be with the other comedies. There are still a couple episodes from last season left on Hulu if you have just started watching it.

Greatest line of the night: "Yours might be the only Indian story with a happy ending."

For any white collar folks out there, it's scary to think that our own corporations are only one or two dim bulbs away from what happens at Veridian Dynamics.

I love this show, I wish it was part of the stronger Wednesday comedy lineup. I heard ratings weren't that great, and that's such a shame. This show needs to last at least through its entire 2nd season, if not longer!

I'm so glad this show came back. It's exactly the type of sitcom that I need. Something where office politics & actual politics are skewered in such a joyful way.

It helps me laugh at all the crap that I go through on a daily basis.

This was the first time I've seen the show and based on this episode it won't be the last. Very funny stuff. Too many funny lines to remember them all. Time for a season pass on my TiVo.

Welcome to the club! The very first episode I saw hooked me too. It was the first episode...and this show has never failed to deliver once. It's always funny, has plots, is intelligently written and it's unique.

I'm so glad it's back and ABC is quickly becoming the #1 network for comedy: Modern Family, Scrubs, Better Off Ted, The Middle...that's not a bad list there.
