Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 8 Perform
(S06E21) This season of So You Think You Can Dance will be ending with a final six instead of a final four. I'm convinced someone messed up the schedule and they were supposed to double eliminate a couple, probably back in the Top 20. Noelle's injury didn't help the situation, and they decided to just go with a final six.We welcome the top seven contestants because Ashleigh popped out her shoulder in rehearsals and has to have an MRI scan. She won't be dancing, but she's in tears because another crippling injury may end her dancing dreams. Sadly, she would have done an amazing job with both Hip-Hop and Bollywood.
Kathryn & Ryan - Disco (Doriana Sanchez) - Kathryn's shoes were causing her to slip out of some of her steps. There were timing issues when the two had side-by-side moves, but the flawless lifts made up for it. I don't see why Kathryn would have any fears with Ryan; out of all the men on this show, Ryan is both the strongest and used to partnering.
Mollee & Jakob - Viennese Waltz (Jason Gilkison) - I'm not sure if I understood the costuming, but the dance looked effortless. The flow of the dance was amazing. I was happy that Jason didn't abuse Jakob's high kicks, but there weren't enough Viennese Waltz steps. I loved the slow supported spin near the end.
Ashleigh - Solo - Clearly she wasn't allowed to do a solo, but I don't see why Ashleigh couldn't do interesting jive kicks or samba voltas with an arm brace on.
Ellenore & Legacy - Contemporary (Travis Wall) - I liked the use of the chair and the table, but Legacy got away with not having to do any contemporary.Travis just used him as a b-boy while Ellenore did all the contemporary kicks. At that point, they could have just given Ellenore & Legacy music and a task of using a table and chairs and they could have choreographed the same thing.
Jakob - Solo - I was mesmerized by Jakob's fluid movements. Most of Jakob's splits and kicks are performed on his right, but I was happy to see he did one kick leading with his left.
Ashleigh & Russell - Hip-Hop (Shane Sparks) - Since Ashleigh is out for the night, Russell is accompanied by Shane's assistant Rachel. She wasn't that good dancing the routine. Russell was in his element and I have no complaints. Russell danced as if he danced for both Ashleigh and himself.
Mollee - Solo - There's something really pop about Mollee's solo, even the breast shake at the end screamed Britney Spears. I did like the slow cartwheel into the body roll.
Kathryn & Ryan - Cha Cha (Jason Gilkison) - Jason decided to make this cha-cha even harder by throwing in the kitchen sink. Ryan was in his element and used his power correctly. Kathryn did a good job keeping up; she had sharp kicks and strong hip action. I was surprised by Kathryn's flexibility and how she launched her legs up into the air.
Legacy - Solo - I was confused by the inclusion of the telephone, it could have been a banana and it wouldn't have made a difference. Legacy should take extra time to sharpen his poses so he wouldn't constantly slip out of them.
Ellenore - Solo - While I didn't think that she was funky enough for the song, I still appreciate her quirky solos.
Russell - Solo - I liked the Santa inspired krump piece since it's something we'd never see in the summer. I wonder if the shoe falling off was intentional or not. Either way, he recovered well.
Mollee & Jakob - Broadway (Joey Dowling) - The beginning bench slide was rusty, but the following steps were sharp. I liked the quick change. Jakob got it easy this time around because he used a lot of moves from his traditional bag of tricks. The movements were strong and it was a standout Broadway routine. Mollee rose to Jakob's level.
Kathryn - Solo - With only one contemporary female dancer left, her routine was almost refreshing to watch. It was stereotypical contemporary and there weren't any moves that were different, but she had a grace and flow.
Ellenore & Legacy - Hip-Hop (NappyTabs) - NappyTabs want an alien hip-hop which fits both Legacy and Ellenore's personality. The synchronization wasn't sharp. The partnered section in the middle was the best part of the routine. The routine was a miss for NappyTabs and they should stick to lyrical hip-hop.
Ryan - Solo - His solos haven't gotten better but adding the back-flip was a nice touch. While standing with Cat, Ryan pulls on heart-strings as he begs America to vote for his wife.
Ashleigh & Russell - Bollywood (Nakul Dev Mahajan) - I found it interesting that Ashleigh commanded the preview. It's a shame because I would have loved to see Ashleigh perform this routine. Naku's assistant Alisha was amazing, and it made Russell look even better. I assume the one lift in the Bollywood was when Ashleigh popped her shoulder. Russell's krump energy fit the Bollywood choreography.
I'm glad we got to see some of the rehearsal footage of Ashleigh; she was giving it her all in the rehearsals. I've grown to love Ashleigh, and I would still like to see her in the finals. Mollee's dancing is still immature compared to Ellenore and Kathryn. I hope she goes before Ashleigh.
The producers spoon-fed Legacy to the audience and gave him easy dances to make it into the finals. Legacy has only done two ballroom pieces and never even touched disco. I would like to see him go, but there is no chance he's budging. Who do you think will make it to the finals? Leave your comments below.
