Idina Menzel Heading to 'Glee' -- But Not as Rachel's Mother

Fans of 'Glee' are finally getting their wish, as Broadway star Idina Menzel will be joining the cast of 'Glee.' Just not in the way they expected.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Menzel, who is best known for her Tony Award-winning turn in the hit musical 'Wicked,' will be joining Fox's hit song and dance show in a recurring role as the leader of a rival glee club named Vocal Adrenaline.

The addition of Menzel to the cast is no surprise to fans of 'Glee,' as they have been lobbying for Menzel to appear; due to both her musical chops and her strong resemblance to series star Lea Michele, Menzel has frequently been put forward as the perfect choice to play the biological mother to Michele's character, Rachel Berry.

While that idea seems on the surface to have been scrapped, we wouldn't put it past those sneaky 'Glee' writers to ratchet up the drama by having Menzel's character turn out to be both the leader of the McKinley High glee club's most-hated rivals and Rachel's mother to boot. The potential in that revelation, both comic and otherwise, seems too good to pass up.

Menzel isn't the only Broadway star to appear on 'Glee;' her former 'Wicked' co-star Kristin Chenoweth has already appeared, while Michele's 'Spring Awakening' partner Jonathan Groff will also appear in the upcoming arc as the lead singer in Menzel's Vocal Adrenaline team -- and a possible romantic interest for Rachel.

With all this music in the air, then, we thought we'd help out our friends at Fox by suggesting some songs for Menzel to belt when she finally hits the airwaves. No need to thank us though; hearing 'Glee''s unique take on these tunes would be thanks enough:

• 'Glee' already hit paydirt once with songs from Menzel's Broadway hit 'Wicked,' as Michele knocked a version of 'Defying Gravity' out of the park. So why not give a nod to both Menzel and rumors about her playing Rachel's mother by having her sing 'I'm Not That Girl'? That should get some conspiracy theories going.

• If that's not subtle enough, we suggest the producers give Menzel a crack at the ethereal Crosby & Nash classic 'Guinevere.' Not only is it a hauntingly beautiful tune essentially written for a capella performance, it was also penned by David Crosby, who is famously the biological father to Melissa Etheridge's children.

• Straying from the theme a little, we'd love to hear 'Glee''s take on the Amy Winehouse title track 'Back to Black,' which we think would be a perfect, downbeat way for Menzel to reveal her sadness over not knowing her only daughter. Oops, looks like we went there after all.

• If Menzel's character does turn out to be Rachel's biological mother, of course, there will be many questions, such as what led her to become a surrogate mother. One possible answer: 'Summer Wine.' We predict that Nancy Sinatra's duet with Lee Hazelwood would bring the house down.

• We'd also love to hear the show bring classic Night Ranger anthem 'Sister Christian' to life. Okay, that doesn't have anything to do the mystery of Rachel's parentage, but that's fine. Sometimes we just want to hear some cool music.
