The man who brought us the 'The Jay Leno Show,' led NBC into last place, but built a powerful cable empire in the process, has been given a new three-year deal.

Indeed, Jeff Zucker has just been re-upped and will remain as CEO of freshly purchased NBC Universal, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The deal follows the official announcement last week of the $37.5 billion merger between cable giant Comcast and NBC Universal -- an arrangement that gives Comcast 51 percent ownership of the entertainment conglomerate (General Electric will keep 49 percent).

That mega-pact still has about 18 months of regulatory hurdles to pass before it's done, so keeping Zucker around through this long, involved process offers some stability for Comcast moving forward.

In many parts of Hollywood, Zucker's extension -- nay, the very fact he's lasted this long -- is a bit of a head-scratcher. Under his lengthy watch, NBC has remained in fourth place among the Big Four networks. Meanwhile, Zucker's decision to cede the 10 o'clock hour on the network in favor of Leno's talk show has created an uproar in the creative community, which has lamented the loss of five hours of scripted programming opportunities a week.

However, NBC's constituents in the advertisinng world see Zucker as an innovator in terms of advancing a network TV business model that's facing challenging times. Meanwhile, under his watch, an NBC Universal cable empire -- that includes USA Network, SyFy and Bravo -- has grown into arguably the most valuable operation in the TV business.
