'On the Air With Alexa Chung' will no longer be on the air after Dec. 17. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that that the live MTV talk show, hosted by the British model-turned-TV host, will not be renewed for a third season.
Designed to cross web and television content, 'On Air' debuted in June and combined live performances, celebrity interviews, videos and feeds from sites like Twitter and Facebook. It was aimed at luring young, hip viewers away from their iPhones and back to television. The first season's hourlong format was quickly shortened to a half-hour for its second season, as the network attempted to further appeal to the show's demographic.

Chung was raised in England by her English mother and Chinese-English father. She was discovered and began modeling by the age of 16. Claiming the profession gave her a distorted body image, Chung became disillusioned and looked to broadcast journalism, quickly becoming a television star in her native country. Given "It Girl" status and applauded for her quirky style, Chung headed to the US, hoping that her new MTV show would fill the void left by the network's popular 'TRL.'
MTV programmer Tony DiSanto told Variety that the station is committed to studio-based, live pop culture shows, but it is still searching for the right fit. "The difference between these and scripted shows," said DiSanto, "is you have to develop these on the air. We make changes until we settle on the show that's what we want."
Until a revamped live show begins in January, MTV will fill the slot with repeats and specials. As for Chung, her MTV contract expires early next year; however, the network plans to keep future plans with her open.
