Duggar was airlifted to the University of Arkansas hospital after complaining of gallstone pains. However, her doctors ordered a C-section after finding Michelle was afflicted with preeclampsia.

According to the statement from the hospital, "Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disease that affects 5 to 8 percent of all pregnancies and is characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Thursday evening, December 10, the obstetrical and neonatal teams reached the collaborative decision that Mrs. Duggar needed an emergency C-section to ensure the blood pressure problem would not be detrimental to her or the baby."

Josie Brooklyn who was born at 25 weeks, 15 weeks premature from her original March due date, is also being carefully monitored in the NICU of the same hospital.

Although the family's baby announcements have traditionally been national fodder, the birth of Josie has been mostly quiet. There is no mention of her birth on the family's official site, though the Duggars' network, TLC, posted a video of Michelle thanking everyone for their good wishes. It is not clear if the video was taken before the Duggars knew of the C-section.

The Duggars had most recently celebrated the birth of the first Duggar grandchild, Mykenzie Renee, in October. Mykenzie is the first child for the Duggar's eldest son Josh and his wife Anna.

TLC is requesting that fans send message of support and share their experiences of premature births on the Duggar's official website, stating, "The family is grateful for all the prayers and well wishes during their recovery."
