George Stephanopoulos' 'Good Morning America' Debut Trails 'Today'

It looks like the recent shake-ups at 'Good Morning America' haven't done much for its ratings -- at least after one day.

According to Nielsen, George Stephanopoulos' debut on Monday yielded about 4.7 million viewers, roughly the same number who tuned in to see Diane Sawyer's last day in the anchor chair on Friday.

By comparison, Katie Couric's last day on NBC rival 'Today' averaged 8 million viewers in 2006, with 6.9 million tuning in to see the debut of Couric's replacement, Meredith Vieira, several months later.

On both Friday (Sawyer's last day) and Monday, 'GMA' trailed 'Today' by a significant margin, with the NBC rival averaging 5.9 million and 5.3 million viewers, respectively.

'GMA' averages between 4 million and 5 million viewers an episode.

However, a lukewarm ratings debut hardly renders Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton White House operative, a poor choice to fill the slot vacated by Sawyer, who will take over for the retiring Charlie Gibson on ABC's 'World News' starting in January.

However, questions do remain in regard to how a hard-core Washington, D.C. politico like Stephanopoulos will handle the softer stuff like, say, cooking-themed segments.

Where is George Stephanopolis. He's awesome and a great coanchor for GMA,
Did he replace Christiana Amanpour. I quit watching after he left Sunday morning?
Please bring him back.
