After a two-hour 'So You Think You Can Dance' finale, it came down to the most highly polished and technically skilled dancer facing off against the untrained krumper, who wowed us every week by putting his all into every style that was thrown his way. In the end, heart won out over polish and Russell Ferguson took the title of "America's Favorite Dancer" and the $250,000 prize that goes along with it.

Here's how the votes broke down for the final six contestants:

6th place: Ryan Di Lello
5th place: Ashleigh Di Lello
4th place: Ellenore Scott
3rd place: Kathryn McCormick
2nd place: Jakob Karr
Winner: Russell Ferguson

The intention was to have a two-hour showcase with the Top 20 dancers re-creating some of the most memorable performances of the season. But when the top six came out for the first time to hear who was the sixth-place finisher, it was revealed that Russell had gotten injured in an earlier performance. Because of this, three dances scheduled for later in the night had to be scrapped and replaced with the video footage from their original episodes.

The night opened with a new dance featuring the original Top 20, including Russell. It was a high-energy hip-hop routine that heavily featured the first 14 dancers eliminated, with a spotlight section toward the end for the the top six finalists.

Many of the best dances of the season were performed live, including the group tap and group contemporary numbers from that first episode in which the Top 20 showcased their individual styles. The tap routine was much sharper than the first time we saw it.

Ellenore, who impressed us throughout the season with her unique personality and dancing style, found magic with choreographer Sonya Tayeh, whose equally one-of-a-kind personality infuses all of her dances. Paired up with the incomparably talented Jakob, Ellenore's brilliance was on full display in this contemporary piece that felt like a surreal dream sequence.

Mollee and Nathan brought back the most accessible and entertaining Bollywood routine we've seen on the show, while Ellenore came back out to perform a powerfully choreographed "fight" by former 'So You Think You Can Dance' runner-up Travis Wall, who's really coming into his own as a choreographer for the show.

Two of the selected dances were from last night's performance. The hip-hop routine with Russell and Kathryn was unfortunately one of those that had to be replayed due to Russell's injury. But there was nothing stopping Kathryn and Jakob from dancing their amazing contemporary routine, which was as close to flawless as when they first did it the night before.

As a special treat, Mary Murphy proposed that married couple Ashleigh and Ryan perform a partnered routine in their own style, something we hadn't had the opportunity to see through the course of the season. The pair choreographed their own jive routine, and showed how amazing they can be together in a style they're comfortable in.

The evening also featured several guests, including The Groovaloos, a dance troupe of break-dancers and hip-hop performers. There was an authentic rawness to their performance, which was at the same time smoothly choreographed and entertaining to watch. This is the kind of group Legacy would fit into well as he moves forward into his career.

Musical guests included Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Lopez. Blige performed 'I Am' from her forthcoming album, and Jennifer Lopez performed with former 'So You Think You Can Dance' contestants while showcasing her new single 'Louboutins.' Leona Lewis was on hand to perform the theme song to James Cameron's 'Avatar.' Her voice sounded amazing, though the melancholy tone of 'I See You' was an odd fit for the energy of the night.

Possibly the most anticipated moment of the night, other than the announcement of the winner, was the appearance of 'American Idol' runner-up Adam Lambert. After the controversy he caused with his performance of 'For Your Entertainment' at the American Music Awards, it was no surprise that he chose a somewhat gentler song, 'Whataya Want From Me,' and gave a much more subdued rendering of it.

In the closing moments, upon hearing that he'd won, Russell seemingly forgot all about his injury, and jumped around the stage in an emotional euphoria before collapsing to the ground. After rising again, he invited fellow contestant Kevin Hunte on stage to share his moment, and thanked everyone for the tremendous honor that he felt he'd been working toward his entire life.

We hope he didn't aggravate his injury with his excitement, and look forward to what he does next in the world of dance.
