The series is executive produced by Tapert and Raimi, who brought us campy syndicated action hours like 'Xena' and 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' back in the '90s.

However, while those successful shows effectively blended action with cheesy humor, there's nothing tongue-in-cheek about the very gritty, somewhat brutal 'Spartacus.'

In fact, shot on location in New Zealand and previewed at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif. over the summer, the pay cable show seemed similar in tone and asthetic to '300.'

Insert your 'This Is Spartacus!' joke here.
