Tyra Banks helps make an SNL skit come to life

Parent Dish -- one of TV Squad's... cousins? step-aunts? -- has a great article about the newest baby fashion accessory: baby wigs. Seriously. Someone has invented and is marketing wigs for infants. In fact, Tyra Banks devoted a segment on her talk show to the phenomenon. I expected her to be all for it, as she has made no secret of her love affair with wigs, but to her credit, she seems appropriately disgusted by the idea.

The article makes it seem as though parents are buying these for their children because having a bald head hurts the baby's self-esteem. That sounds somehow... familiar.

Yes, the first thing I thought of when I read about this and then saw the terrifying-looking wigs on Tyra was the hilarious Saturday Night Live skit in which Bill Hader is trying to sell Nelson's Baby Toupees: "You gave him life, now give him confidence." What made the sketch so funny at the time is that the idea of putting a baby in a wig is just patently ridiculous. But, really, with the emphasis that's being put on image as related to babies and motherhood, it really shouldn't be much of a surprise that this has become our reality.

Now, the funniest thing to me is simply how much better the fake wigs on SNL look as compared to the weird, monk-like Baby Bangs that Tyra has on her show.

Yeah I had a baby girl, we just dressed her in pink until she had enough hair for a bow. Baby Protip: If people think your baby is a male when its a female, stop dressing it like a dude.

You'd never see Oprah throwing a paying customer under the bus like that! Gotta love Tyra for holding to her mantra of 'no fake hair' this season.

This baby wig madness has been around for some time now. I think I saw some blog talking about that Baby Bangs site at the beginning of this year.

I thought it was crazy that people are willing to pay $30 bucks just so their child could have pseudo-hair.

Yet I am not a mother of a baby girl with no hair. I know they must get tired of people saying "Oh, what a cute boy you have", because of the lack of hair their baby has.

I know I get tired of people thinking my baby boys are girls because they were born with a full head of hair.
