Merry Christmas on the soaps: Days dumps Dattilo, B&B hires Conroy

bryan_dattilo_lucas_days_of_our_livesHow's this for coal in your stocking? Right before the holiday break, the powers that be at Days of our Lives axed Bryan Dattilo. They told the 16-year veteran that he didn't have to return after the New Year. He and the character of Lucas Roberts are done.

Bryan has been through this revolving door before, ironically. In 2001, he was also let go from Days of Our Lives and re-hired a year later. So, perhaps, he's not too concerned about losing the job.

What's interesting is that his current contract was good through February 2010 and at least based on what's happening now, there doesn't seem to be an exit for the Lucas character.

However, there also isn't much of a storyline for him. The character is no longer romantically involved with Sami (Alison Sweeney) and with the roster of hot male talent of late, he may have been seen as an extra man. Too much of a good thing. Odd man out. (Have I missed any cliche?)

One the other hand, and in a happier soap industry story for the holiday season, actor Zack Conroy has a new job. He was last on Guiding Light as James Spaulding, but now Conroy's been cast on The Bold and the Beautiful. He'll be playing Oliver Jones, which means he's related to Whip and Agnes (she's been going by Sandy).

Here's what B&B Exec Producer Brad Bell said about the character: "Oliver is a leading man. He's someone who's in the music industry, with lots of ambition. But he's also a good guy who's going to be looking after his sister, Agie. Oliver and Agnes are very close and look out for each other. He's going to meet all these Forresters and Logans and hook up with Hope, but Steffy's going to be there to cause trouble." Zack Conroy's first air date is January 20.
