New Jersey lawmakers don't like Jersey Shore

by Brad Trechak, posted Dec 24th 2009 10:00AM

Jersey ShorePerhaps there is such a thing as bad publicity. New Jersey lawmakers are looking to cancel the MTV reality series Jersey Shore via a boycott of its advertisers. Mind you, MTV has been dealing with controversy since its inception (as has Jersey Shore), so this move is unlikely to cancel the series. If anything, given the anti-establishment vibe of the channel, it may even make it more popular. MTV should send the lawmakers a gift basket.

While I'm no fan of the show, it shouldn't be canceled in this manner. One can only hope that poor ratings contribute to its demise (although that's not likely at this stage).

This sort of end would only give those that support it more fuel for the fire. MTV might be facing less criticism if they had a more ethnically diverse cast for the show. On the other hand, the network might be seeking the criticism out like the attention-whore that it is in an effort to reinforce its reputation.

The thing is what is happening on this show is representative of what this generation is all about....drinking and hooking up. There is no respect and no morals. It's not just in Jersey...it's rampant all over the country. They just happened to pick a NJ setting that is known for this behavior during the summer. Just check out any college setting where clubs are around and you'll find the same thing. It's a generational thing and we the parents have allowed this to happen. The shame is that these young people have documented this for the world to see and some day they will have children that will see this. I don't think they are thinking of the backlash years down the line. The network should be ashamed of themselves taking advantage of these young people to make money and promoting this kind of behavior.

While these people were cast for the personalities, and they are not your typical Jersey Shore residents. They are not that far from many of the people walking the boardwalks in Seaside, or Wildwood on a summer night. There are some people a lot like this cast. Heck, they guy that punched her wasn't on the show, he was a real person.

That said, not all shore towns are like this, just the ones aimed towards teens and 20 somethings. Places like Ocean City are more familly friendly, Ocean City is a dry town.

But I hated living in Jersey, there is a reason it is free to enter NJ and you have to pay a toll to leave.

If the jersey Shore sees fit to let the animals run the zoo in Seaside, and take their money, then they should complain when the media takes notice of it.

Years ago our esteemed lawmakers were able to remove Uncle Floyd from the public airwaves. Now they've set their sights on another silly TV show.
Is it any wonder why New Jersey is going broke? That people are leaving in droves for Pennsylyvania and points south.
New jersey has by far the most corrupt politicans and dumbest electorate in The Union.
