Do you have any TV New Year's Resolutions?

Bob Newhart ShowIt's that time of year when I ask you what your resolutions are. Not your general resolutions, I mean your TV-related ones.

Looking over last year's list, I actually did pretty well. I didn't watch American Idol, I gave Jimmy Fallon and Conan O'Brien a chance even though I wasn't sure if either of them would hold my interest (for the record, Fallon has and O'Brien hasn't), and I am trying to record more late night shows so I'm not up until 1:30 a.m. every single night. As for catching up on Fringe, well, that resolution I haven't kept.

Here are my resolutions for this year. What are yours?

  • No more reality shows. 2009 was the year my senses officially became overloaded with reality shows. And I don't even watch many of them. But it's hard to get away from them when shows like Jon & Kate seep into other realms of pop culture (and your local news), so even though I don't watch too many of them I still feel like I know everything that's happening on the shows themselves. So this year I'm going for a zero tolerance rule: no reality shows at all.
  • Finish buying season sets of favorite shows. This may seem like an odd resolution. Most people resolve to spend less and save more, but I have to spend more money on TV DVDs. I started buying The Office, The Bob Newhart Show, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show and a few others and then just stopped. I have to get all the sets ASAP.
  • Organize those DVDs. Speaking of TV DVDs, I really have to organize the ones I have. I started out by having them all in a nice order on my shelves and now they're... well, they're just all over the place. On top of books, on my coffee table, under my coffee table, on the floor. Right now I'm looking at a Man From U.N.C.L.E. set that for some reason I have placed in the corner in front of the circuit breaker box.
  • Watch CBS Sunday Morning more. I really like this show, but for some reason I always forget to watch it on Sunday mornings. Not really sure why that is.
  • Catch up on Fringe. Hey, I can dream.

My resolution is to watch less crappy TV. We have already started this at my house - we just watch the Update part of SNL (via hulu) because it has been disappointing for years, for example, and have stopped watching 30 Rock altogether - and it has been very nice. After watching the original version of The Office during its run on Adult Swim for the 5th or 6th time, I realized I waste too much time watching tv that irritates me.

...I mean it was my 5th or 6th time watching the series run of The Office in general, not just on Adult Swim :)

To stop reading spoilers about the new season of Lost.

Seriously, i need to stop. I've read so much, and even though i still have no concrete idea what is going on next season, im afraid ill spoil something i never wanted spoiled, and it will be too late.

100% agreed. It's so hard to stay away from them though!

It is SO worth it to avoid spoilers for LOST (and, really, anything else). We were blissfully spoiler free on LOST and Dexter and The Office, etc, and it has been great. We even avoid watching previews at the end of a first-run episode.

Sir Yuck-Yuck

mine is to watch the 1,225 episodes of the original Dark Shadows (ABC-Tv 1966-1971) series. I seen the 1991 short lived NBC-Tv revival as 12 episodes was easy to manage LOL but I do want to see the original series before the Tim Burton directed - Johnny Depp starring 2011 Dark Shadows Movie comes out
