New TV DVDs for Jan. 5: 'Chuck,' 'Big Love' and More.

January is here, and in the world of television that means the return of all those popular shows that went on hiatus so the networks could bring you 5800 college football bowl games instead. But if your favorite series still isn't back yet (we have to wait another month for 'Lost?!'), you can always turn to your DVD player to find respite from the winter doldrums.

And what says entertainment more than multiple wives? According to HBO's 'Big Love,' well, not a whole lot; you can get yourself caught up on all the man-on-woman-on-woman-on-woman action with the release of 'Big Love: The Complete Third Season.' And by action, we mean messy marital disputes.

Compared to that tangled knot, the story of a sales clerk with a government database in his brain seems simple. 'Chuck,' as it happens, tells just such a story; you can find out all the details with 'Chuck: The Complete Second Season.'

How do you make old release new again? Why, by bundling a bunch of them together! The good folks at 'Burn Notice,' have perfected the art with the 'Burn Notice: Seasons 1 & 2 Set.' We'll let it slide, though, because 'Burn Notice' is really cool.

You know other show seems a bit old? 'The Waltons.' Of course, it seemed old even when it was coming out, but that's just the kind of homey nostalgia that made the show so comforting to watch. You can relive all of the Great Depression's fun times with 'The Waltons: The Complete Seasons 1 & 2.'

Switching themes ever so slightly, 'Battlestar Galactica' also hits the shelves this week with a reissue of 'Battlestar Galactica: Season One,' this time on Blu-Ray. We think they could make a killing selling Cylon themed Blu-Ray players, but then again, they haven't asked us either.

Also beaming down to the sci-fi aisle this week are two classic 'Doctor Who' stories, 'Doctor Who: The Keys of Marinus' and 'Doctor Who: The Twin Dilemma,' which are released to coincide with the final appearance of the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. We'll miss you, Doc.

Coming in from the world of cartoon nostalgia is another pop culture classic, 'Super Friends,' which drops 'Super Friends: Season One, Vol. 1' on the world today. Apparently the season was too big to fit into just one release; that's what happens when you put Apache Chief in charge of packaging.

Finally, remember that hit Fox show 'The Philanthropist?' Well, you're not alone; pretty much nobody else does either. If you want to see what you missed on this series about a rich guy traveling the world like Caine from 'Kung Fu,' righting wrongs with the power of his checkbook, you can now get 'The Philanthropist: The Complete Series' on DVD.
