ABC Picks Up Comedies From Carlos Mencia, Cedric the Entertainer

by Michael D. Ayers, posted Jan 6th 2010 11:30AM
It's a well tested theory: comedians tend to do well with sitcoms. At least that's what ABC is hoping, as the Hollywood Reporter confirms that Carlos Mencia and Cedric the Entertainer have struck pilot deals with the network.

Both will be multi-camera comedies, with Mencia's a family comedy that poaches from his own life and stand-up work, set within a multicultural, immigrant-based family. Veteran writers Mitchel Katlin and Nat Bernstein, who collaborated on 'Ally McBeal' and 'Doogie Howser, M.D.,' are signed on as writers for Mencia's show.

Mencia's last big project was heading up the Comedy Central sketch show, 'Mind of Mencia,' which lasted for three seasons. It's a well tested theory: comedians tend to do well with sitcoms. Mencia's last big project was heading up the Comedy Central sketch show, 'Mind of Mencia,' which lasted for three seasons.

As for Cedric the Entertainer, his pilot will offer the comedian as an ex-baseball player turned announcer whose son and 6-year-old granddaughter re-enter his life.

Al Higgins ('Malcolm in the Middle') and Devon Shepard ('Weeds,' 'Everybody Hates Chris') are signed on in undisclosed roles.

More so than Mencia, Cedric the Entertainer has had quite a successful film and television career over the last 10 years, appearing in hits such as 'Cadillac Records' and 'Barbershop,' as well as heading up his own sketch comedy show 'Cedric the Entertainer Presents.' That show was canceled after one season on Fox.

He's also been a prolific voice actor, with credits including 'Ice Age,' 'Madagascar' and 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.'

Whether or not the pilots get picked up remains to be seen, but with the success of ABC's 'Modern Family,' which pits different generations and multi-culturalism at the core of its humor, and 'Cougar Town,' which takes the familiar comedic face of Courteney Cox and re-imagines her in a new role, producers have reason to be optimistic about this announcement.
