Johnny Depp, Sandra Bullock Top 2010 People's Choice Awards Winners

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jan 7th 2010 2:16AM
Sandra Bullock, People's Choice Awards 2010It was a low-key night for the 2010 People's Choice Awards, the 36th annual gala celebrating fan favorites in movies, TV and music. Nothing particularly amazing or outlandish happened, and most of the stars donned conventional gowns, including host Queen Latifah, who looks fabulous these days. She started the show off with a musical medley, including Susan Boyle's hit 'I Dreamed a Dream,' then launched into the presentations.

We didn't see all of the awards being presented, including Favorite Talk Show Host, won by Ellen DeGeneres. But, of course, she had a few words to say about it. "Oprah, I love you, and I'm sorry your show got canceled." Then she added something about winning eleven times, "one for each of Sandra Bullock's toes." Maybe that was a private joke between the two?

DeGeneres then introduced the nominees for Favorite Comedy Movie, with 'The Proposal' taking top honors. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds accepted the award, and said they were sorry Betty White couldn't be there. Bullock also thanked the director Anne Fletcher, "because she's truly a freak."

We also saw some sneak previews of upcoming movies, including 'Robin Hood,' starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. Tim Dunn and one of the Pussycat Dolls introduced the trailer.

Latifah worked her comedic magic with a few skits in between awards. In the first, she showed up in the bedroom of the 'Paranormal Activity' couple, thought perhaps they were making a sex tape, then had a talk with the demon. She had to host a big awards show the next day, after all, so quit making such a racket!

Rascal Flatts appeared next, noting that they actually started off as an R&B Band -- K.C. and the Sunshine Flatts? Boyz II Rascals? Mama and the Rascals? Yeah, the joke didn't work any better when they told it live. Anyway, the winner of the Favorite R&B Artist was Mariah Carey, who stumbled her way to the stage in a skintight white dress with the usual low-cut flair. After thanking the fans -- her "extended family" -- she thanked God for "all the incredible blessings in my life, and also my husband Nick, especially for helping me with this dress, because it's such a drama!"

Kate Walsh appeared next, and experienced her own troubles getting down the ramp in sky-high heels. She presented the award for Favorite Comedy Actor to Steve Carell of 'The Office,' who said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, if you will repeat after me -- That's what she said!" He then proceeded to carry the joke through his acceptance, noting that he was going to "go home and find a special place to put this," that he wanted it so bad he could "taste it," and that it was a true honor for him, "and I'm glad I came."

Alyson Hannigan, 2010 People's Choice Awards James Denton and Sofia Vergera presented the award for Favorite TV Comedy Actress to Alyson Hannigan. The 'How I Met Your Mother' star thanked her mom for getting carpal tunnel voting for her, as well as the cast and crew and "my two favorite people -- my husband and my baby girl."

Jeff Probst introduced a clip of the upcoming 'Survivor 20: Heroes vs. Villains,' then Jenna Elfman ('Accidentally On Purpose') and Chevy Chase ('Community') presented the award for Favorite TV Comedy to 'The Big Bang Theory.' The cast and crew crowded on stage, with Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco saying a few words, and Jim Parsons adding, "Thank you. That's how we get to keep our jobs. I love y'all."

Christian Slater from 'The Forgotten' introduced Mary J. Blige, who performed "I Am,' and Katie Cassidy ('Melrose Place') and Kellan Lutz ('Twilight') presented Carrie Underwood with the Favorite Country Artist award. Underwood nearly slipped on her way to the stage, saying when she got to the mic, "That just shows you how excited I am!"

Paula Patton from 'Precious' presented the award for Favorite TV Drama Actor to Hugh Laurie, who motioned the cast and crew of 'House' onto the stage, then joked "Without me, they're nothing. I am truly fantastic and an honor to work with."

The Black-Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am. introduced an exclusive sneak peek at 'Clash of the Titans,' then Queen Latifah rounded up Taylor Lautner, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman to take a picture with her. Between awards, backstage photos were presented by Kodak, "the people's choice for pocket video cameras." Product placement was rampant.

After professing his love for Taylor Lautner and noting that he was his screen saver, George Lopez of 'Lopez Tonight' announced the nominees for Favorite Movie Actress, a.k.a. "the five white women in America that Tiger Woods has not slept with." Sandra Bullock won, noting one correction: "It's only four women who haven't slept with Tiger Woods." But not really!

Bullock got a little tearful in her acceptance speech, telling her dad she hoped he was doing better, calling her husband "my boyfriend," and adding, "Life is hard sometimes, but we get there with laughter."

Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson presented the award for Favorite Action Star to Hugh Jackman, who said, "Between being foreign born, an action star, and People's Choice, there's only one thing left for me to do, and that's run for the governor of California."

Latifah then made a visit to Edward Cullen, who invited her into the woods. After asking him to be a presenter, then looking at his list of demands, including an eyebrow stylist and rum raisin lip liner, he vanished into the woods. "Fine, just disappear," she said. "I'll just get a werewolf to do the show!"

B.J. Novak, Diane Krueger, and Eli Roth of 'Inglourious Basterds' (winner of the Favorite Independent Film award) presented the Favorite Breakout Movie Actor award to Taylor Lautner, who noted that this was his first People's Choice award.

More product placement as celebrity style expert Bobbie Thomas shared some of her favorite beauty secrets straight from CVS Pharmacy, as well as various products that made Christina, Miss People's Choice, gorgeous for the big night.

Ginnifer Goodwin, 2010 People's Choice AwardsJosh Holloway and Ginnifer Goodwin presented the award for Favorite Male Artist to Keith Urban, who said he had the most fun on the road this year. "I don't even care if you download it illegally and give it to your friends," he said of his songs, then thanked "My wife, Nicole. I love you so much, baby girl," and "Sunday Rose, at home in bed."

After Demi Lovato and Colbie Caillat introduced performers Cobra Starship with special guest Nicole Scherzinger, Jessica Alba from 'Valentine's Day' presented the award for Favorite Web Celeb to Ashton Kutcher, who arrived on stage with his video camera in hand and his Twitter name emblazoned on the front of it. "We live on the Web right now," he said. "Luke had the force, we have the Web." But at least all of Kutcher's many Twitter followers have a purpose -- helping to fund the charity Malaria No More.

Kathryn Morris ('Cold Case') and Greg Grunberg ('Heroes') appeared on stage next. Noting that 'The Vampire Diaries' was the Favorite New TV Drama, Grunberg joked, "It's a tough category. One minute you're on top of the world, the next, your mom's not even watching the show!"

They also presented the Favorite New TV Comedy award to the cast and crew of 'Glee,' who said they wanted to do something special to say thanks. Lines of wait staff filed down the aisles with plates of DiGiorno Pizza for the audience (we're sure they were thrilled to be snarfing pizza in their fancy gowns).

L.L. Cool J. presented the Favorite Female Artist award to Taylor Swift, who proclaimed it "a beautiful way to start a new decade."

After a word about the official charity of the People's Choice Awards, Children's Safe Drinking Water, Sacha Baron Cohen arrived onstage to present the Favorite Movie Actor award to Johnny Depp, noting that in the last ten years, Depp has also received more People's Choice votes than any other actor, making him the People's Choice Actor of the Decade.

In case you're wondering, here's what Cohen said about Depp's Willie Wonka character: "He's made it acceptable once again for creepy middle-aged men to approach children and offer them candy. Thank you for that, Johnny." And of his upcoming 'Alice in Wonderland' character: "He'll make it acceptable for creepy middle-aged men to invite young girls around for tea and offer them hallucinogenic drugs. Thank you for that, Johnny."

To which Depp replied, "I'd like to thank the great Sacha Baron Cohen for not verbally decimating me here tonight." He added, "I'm deeply humbled by this great honor, which comes from you, the people, which means everything to me. The only reason any of us are up here is because of you. It has been quite an amazing decade, quite an incredible ride."
