Ted Koppel may return to ABC to host This Week

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jan 7th 2010 8:42PM
Thank God for the Internet. If that headline had been spoken on the radio or a TV news show, it would have sounded like some bizarre Abbott and Costello routine.

"Did you hear that Ted Koppel may be hosting This Week on ABC?"

"Really, what show?

"Exactly."

"I sure want to know the name of the show he'll be hosting on ABC."

"Well I just thought I'd tell you."

"Well I just thought I'd ask."

"Ask me what?"

"I don't know."

"THIRD BASE!"

UGH, what is it today with people returning from the past? Ok, I thought This Week improved dramatically when then producer from Nightline was brought in after George Stephanopoulos took over. But to bring BACK Ted Koppel to ABC and have him host This Week would be a HUGE mistake.

I don't think of Ted Koppel when I think of political news. And didn't the guy retire?

I would much rather they used Jake Tapper. He's been a fantastic replacement for Stephanopoulous, whom I've always enjoyed. Tapper has a slight edge over Stephanopoulous in that he's a natural at interviews.

If I had any complaint about This Week, it's when they occassionally bring back former hosts Cokie Roberts and Sam Donaldson. They're absolutely grating to watch.

If they dead set against Tapper, then hire Anderson Cooper away from CNN or Jon Stewart from Comedy Central. Otherwise I suspect my days of watching This Week are probably numbered.
