A Lost spinoff? No, no, no, no, please God no

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 9th 2010 2:30PM
LostDamon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have said that when Lost ends, there won't be a spinoff, a sequel, or even a feature film based on the show. When it's done, it's done.

ABC never got that memo.

The network says that they want to keep the show going in some way, and besides special DVDs and movies, there might also be a spinoff TV show that features new characters and a new plot. [Insert heavy sigh here.] Haven't they ever seen AfterMASH or The Golden Palace?

While it's true that a spinoff can be good and successful (we talked about that yesterday), most are ill-conceived and just a way for a network to keep a franchise going for ratings and $$$$$$. These seems like one of those situations.

They say they want to keep the show going the way Paramount has kept Star Trek going. But the Star Trek franchise is a different animal. The plot is very spinoff and sequel-friendly, with new casts and new ships and new eras. I guess we could have a Lost that is set 30-40 years ago or even one that features the offspring of some of the Lost characters, but that would really be stretching things out, wouldn't it?

I'd rather see another Star Trek TV show than a Lost spinoff.

How about an Im a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.... Lost Special!....

Contestants must live in a rebuilt hatch... foraging for leftover Dharma Initiative cans of food. Trials will see the celebrities pit their wits against each other, the others and someones mother to win food and stave eviction.

Oh.... that's only if they survive the plane crash!

Think about this, a spinoff that only concerned the Dharma Initiative, there is so much story that could still be told about them. There are many questions about what they were actually doing on the island, what their interactions with the others is etc.

There could even be a point where our main characters are back for guest appearances, though not focussed on them, we could see the same time frame from other perspectives. Lots of potential in my opinion...

How about a different perspective to the same story -- The (Dharma) Initiative, and shot stylistically similar to The Office. Does that sound like anything that's already on ABC?

ABC can shout spin off all they want, but I don't think it could possibly happen. Didn't they sign some contract with Abrams a few years ago that would prevent anything like this from happening, or was that just to end this show in this final season?

Never cared about Lost at all. Ads for the premier just didn't grab me. So, any thing that would carry the show further is just wasted TV time as far as I'm concerned. A sad fact of life is most sequels or other attempts to carry any story past the end of the original are just doomed to fail because of week plots and character developement.

I wouldn't mind seeing a spin off. I think that the formula for this show is very original and would like to see it continue.

It depends on how the show ends. If they get off the island, then in the new show a plane carrying one of the current cast(with lots of other passengers of course) could crash onto a different island.

I wouldn't mind to be honest I think there is a lot of potential for a spin off.

They are just wrapping up the story of the people that ended up on the island in some ways.

They could do spin offs about a number of things even if they forego bringing the characters back into the fold.

There are a whole lot of plotholes that are unlikely to be summed up in the last season so there is plenty of content for an extension of the product.

As long as they do it well it doesn't matter if they do a spinoff.
