Conan clears up the late night shake-up rumors

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jan 9th 2010 6:00PM
A lot of crazy things have been said about NBC's efforts to reshuffle their late night deck. Thankfully, Conan O'Brien is here to clear them all up.

The Tonight Show host addressed the rumors surrounding his show last night. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that neither he nor Leno will have to take any last minute maternity leave.

Conan is little more than Letterman "lite". NBC is getting repaid for the screw job they gave Letterman over the Tonight Show job he rightfully deserved.

I like Leno's show at ten. That's why they're cancelling it.
Just look what happened to the stock market as soon as I started investing.

People make fun of Leno's bad puns and cheap jokes and one liners and I agree but seriously Conan? He's the same only substitute it with awkward extended blank stares at the camera and rocking his head back and forth while his hair waves goodbye. Conan's "look at me move awkwardly and non purposefully in order to distract people from realizing what I say isn't funny" hasn't worked in replacing Leno's cheap trick pony jokes since they changed up the late night lineup. It is what it is people. The fact is that ratings for the Tonight Show have dropped considerably since Leno was on it mostly because that crowd apparently doesn't like Conan and similarly Leno's show has suffered unmercifully because they couldn't bother to come up with anything worthwhile more than once a week on it. Here's to them perhaps stepping up and investing in a few quality scripted shows instead....I wish.

It's not an apples to apples comparison. When Leno took over The Tonight Show, his 10pm lead in was a series of high profile, highly rated shows (ER, L&O in its hayday, etc.). Conan's lead in...a floundering Jay Leno. Late night ratings are all about an 11pm news cast holding on to a significant amount of viewers from the 10pm hour and then the Tonight Show holding on to a significant amount of viewers from that newscast. When you cut the 10pm hour at the knees by basically surrendering, of course you're going to hurt the ratings of the other programs. The affiliates aren't mad about the ratings that Conan's getting at 11:35pm...they're mad about the ratings that Leno's getting at 10pm.

It's a classic systemic problem...only NBC has their heads too far in the sand (or the Zucker) to figure it out.

Makes you think whether NBC is endorsing being a punchline of Leno and Conan's jokes. But I hope Conan goes to Fox, he was there for The Simpsons, and I think he will be able to outlast Leno. Leno is going to be getting a lot of backlash after this.
