Susan Boyle flying to Chicago just for Oprah

by Allison Waldman, posted Jan 9th 2010 3:00PM
susan_boyle_hairbrushWhen Oprah made her tearful, but happy, announcement about the ending of The Oprah Winfrey Show, she committed to making 2010 something special. That was clearly in her mind as Oprah has reportedly booked Susan Boyle, the Scottish singing star who catapulted to fame in 2009 after appearing on Britain's Got Talent, for a sit down interview and musical interlude on Wednesday, January 14.

That's right, the six million CD selling Boyle will actually be in Chicago's Harpo Studios. No satellite feed this time. Nope, Susan Boyle will be able to jump up and down on the couch just like Tom Cruise. Or maybe she can bring her kitty cat, Pebbles, on the set and introduce her to American audiences?

Susan has been flying a lot lately. She's been doing singing engagements everywhere, including New Year's Eve in Japan. Can you imagine what kind of culture shock she must be going through? She's spent all of her life in a small Scottish village and now she's an international musical phenom with Japanese fans screaming out her name and crying over her music? Her debut CD, I Dreamed A Dream, has been the number one album in America for six weeks!

I'm counting on Oprah really getting SuBo (yeah, that's her new moniker in the media) to talk. She's yet to really open up with any interviewers, so the pressure's on Ms. O to do some research, dig up some good material, and make Susan comfortable enough to share.

We seem to have some very angry people posting here today. I'm looking out on a snow-covered garden, serene and beautiful if a bit slippery, so I'm not going to add fuel to the fire. It's good that Susan has so many devoted fans who defend and protect her - I am one of them, and our numbers are rising by the hour. We all have different opinions - eg I hate the moniker "Subo" but others see it as a sign of affection. Let's agree that she has captivated so many of us with her voice, warmth, wit and lovely personality and deserves every iota of success and love. Happy Susan Day.

FYI, here is the link to the Oprah Community thread where Susan Boyle fans are writing why they love her and her music.

Ms. Waldman, thank you for the lovely article about Susan Boyle. I am an ardent Susan fan, and we in America are really anticipating seeing her on the Oprah Show. Oprah is a very nice, warm lady and a skilled interviewer -I have every confidence that Susan will enjoy herself immensely, as she has done on both her previous American visits. As to her debut album, it is truly beautiful and deserves the accolades it has garnered. Susan has achieved her dream and those of us who love her couldn't be happier.

@Samie -
Susan Boyle signs her autographs "Subo" and seems to find the name endearing. Her online store is called "the subostore."

A number of Americans use this name, since she has adopted it herself.

Wow, SUsan Boyle fans, please think before attacking. I wonder if Ms. Waldman - who wrote a very positive blog - will avoid writing about Susan in the future? I hope not.....

@CanadianBill @bernicer It is not necessary to slam Ms. Waldman as ill-informed or snidely ask her to do some research. This is an overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic article on Susan Boyle and her upcoming appearance on Oprah - did Ms. Waldman not mention that the Scottish singing star and international musical phenom with the number one album in America for six weeks sold six million CD? Waldman even jokingly suggested that Boyle should bring her famous cat Pebble to Chicago and introduce her to American audiences. So it could be just an honest oversight by Ms. Waldman. There is no need to point out the misinformation along with some arrogant-sounding, negative remarks. These well-intentioned but derisive comments by some hard-core Susan Boyle's fans might actually turn off potential fans or even reporters.

It took me less than 5 seconds to type in 'Susan Boyle Interviews' in Google and come up with a list including those I mentioned - which would have prevented the misinformation that Ms Boyle has not done any serious interviews. Other than that, yes it was a very postive, lovely article.

She won't be called Subo here in the US with the exception of worthless sites like this one that copies and pastes from other worthless online articles from the UK. Notice when the UK wants Americans to read their trashicles they do not refer to Susan Boyle as SUBO, Hairy Angel, Spinster, or any of their other ridiculous names they use to trash this woman. The damage is already done though as Americans do not trust the UK media because of the hell they have put Susan Boyle through. Nice to her when they want something then tearing her down again first chance they get. Stupid names to not fit with global phenomenons known as Susan Boyle.
