Peter Rice and Simon Cowell at the Winter 2010 TCAsAt the FOX exec session, Kevin Reilly and Peter Rice brought an end to the speculation about what's going on with Simon Cowell by bringing him on stage.

The plan: Cowell will leave American Idol after this season, and The X Factor will be coming to the US starting in 2011. He even signed his agreement on stage (see picture on the right).

Some quotes from Simon and the Fox execs after the jump:

# Paula question: "I adore Paula. I miss her. Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity. You're just going to have to watch this space." Interesting...
# Simon: "Right now America needs a second show, and I'll put my heart and soul in this."
# Simon likes the contestants this year. Doesn't he like them every year. "Maybe not three years ago, the Taylor (Hicks) year."
# Rice: "American Idol is an incredible television show and we want to make sure it remains so."
# Someone asks who's on the shortlist to replace Simon. The execs laugh because Simon just signed. They want to give themselves time.
# Simon calls Lady GaGa the "most influential artist in the world," and he'd like to find someone like that.
# "When somebody connects with an audience, it just happens. I can't describe it."
# "Susan Boyle is the best example of why I like doing shows with an upper age range."
# "I want to leave Idol this year bigger and better than ever before. I hope it'll be higher (rated ) than it was last year.' "
# "Everyone thought I was negotiating (when I said I'd leave). I wanted to do something different."
# "I want to find a star at the end of (The X Factor). I really do."
# "I've had the best 8 or 9 years doing this job. The most imp. thing is to get someone who knows what they're talking about."
# Cowell suggests Ryan Seacrest replaces him "so he can have another job." "A lot of people want to do the job now. it's a great gig."
# Reilly: Scenario is that SYTYCD will likely be pushed to summer.
# The judge is judged as well as the singer in whatever category He/she is mentoring.
# Age range can be 14 - whatever. The most important part is that the judges mentor a selection of contestants.
# Differences: The auditions will be done differently. Purpose-built done live in auditoriums. Sung to backing track.
# "This is like when I first came over to do Idol. I didn't know whether we'd work six months or six days. Anything can happen."
# Simon: "I wouldn't have put X Factor on if I didn't think it would exist separately (from Idol)."
# Simon: "Idol, even though it is not my show, is still close to me... I genuinely believe this show can last for 10, 20 years."

I was in London during the Xfactor finals with Olly and was truly amazing Television to watch!!! So much better than American Idol, Simon is truly a genius when it comes to putting out a great product! Plus, the judges were so much more entertaining and a class act. Forget about Paula Abdul, she brings nothing to the table except that loopy personality. And Randy has to get a new vocabulary other than DAWG. You watch, Simon is 90 percent of the reason people watch these shows, he's going to put American Idol to sleep.

It was so great to hear that Idol had finally dumped Paula who annoyed the hell out of me every time she opened her mouth. Then more great news that they had hired Ellen who is absolutely hilarious and was fabulous as a guest judge on SYTYCD. So we will get to see at least one season with this great judging panel. Maybe they should look at another honest Brit to replace Simon as there are many of them in England who can replace him.

As someone who has never seen X-Factor, what is the difference between the two shows?

how are their respective formats different?

I've been torrenting X Factor each week it's on for the last three seasons... it's a great show, and I'm excited that they're bringing it here!

That is unfortunate. Without Simon the show has no validity. Simon knows what real talent sounds and looks like, and although many of the opinions he expresses are taken as brash and hurtful, it is nearly always right on the money...reality...the cold hard truth. This truth is what the show will no longer have without him.

Idol will probably be canned, that's what happened to Pop Idol after Simon left.

The X-Factor format is much more entertaining than Idol IMHO.

American Idol will not be the same without Paula Abdul. It will be anemic and far less interesting without Simon. With both gone the show should be canceled.

I don't watch Idol for the judges. I can tell what sounds good.
