DGA Nominations for the best in TV in 2009

mad_men_finale_amcThere's been so much action going on with the TCA and the midseason returns and what-not that we sort of missed the announcement for the DGA Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television nominations for 2009. It's quite an interesting bunch, as much for what and who's included and who and what were left out.

Since the DGA noms come from the directors themselves, these awards are indicative of what the professionals really think of their peers. Very illuminating, if you ask me. Check it out, category by category, and feel free to comment on my comments.

Drama Series
Paris Barclay, In Treatment
Jack Bender, Lost
Jennifer Getzinger, Mad Men
Lesli Linka Glatter, Mad Men
Matthew Weiner, Mad Men

Hmm... you think Mad Men has a chance to win? Like the Writers Guild awards, Mad Men is getting mucho love. The Lost nomination, however, could skew the whole thing. Paris Barclay's nod for In Treatment is a surprise to me. I can't imagine how Breaking Bad was not included in this category. The finale, directed by Adam Bernstein, was devastating.

Comedy Series
Paris Barclay, Glee
Larry Charles, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Ryan Murphy, Glee
Jeff Schaffer, Curb Your Enthusiasm
Jason Winer, Modern Family

Okay, now this is surprising. I've been down on 30 Rock, but the industry? Usually the NBC show is good for a couple of nods. Not this time. Again, Paris Barclay gets nominated (he must be a popular guy -- no, no, I'm sure he's very deserving). The big surprise may be Winer's nod for Modern Family, but that show is definitely getting all kinds of award recognition. This will come down to the love for Seinfeld alums on Curb or the Glee phenomenon. Since this is an industry thing, I guessing Curb.

The winners will be announced at the 62nd Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 30 at the Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
