If you watch TV, you're going to die

TV Squad logoI know what you're thinking. Even if you don't watch TV you're going to die. We're all going to die. Happy New Year!

But a recent study by the Baker IDI Heart and Disease Institute and published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association (which is my second favorite magazine after Cat Fancy) says that the more we watch TV, the greater our risk of dying from all sorts of things. Every hour that we spend in front of the tube increases cardiovascular diseases risk by 18% and cancer by 9%. Overall it's an 11% increase. And these increases are across the board and not affected by heart problems, disease or any other conditions you might already have.

There seems to be one of these studies every single year. I'm not quite sure why TV gets the blame because they're trying to say that it's a sedentary lifestyle that increases the risk, not that there's a TV in front of you. But I guess they'll never come and say "reading books in a comfortable chair increases your risk of death by 9%."

TV is my only drug of choice. So what if it gives me a disease. It's my life and best of all it's legal and not as costly as the illegal drugs which will kill you a lot faster.

So if I watch 12 hours of television then I'm guaranteed to have cancer. Uh oh, I just watched that amount this weekend. Well it's been a good life, and I think it was wroth catching up on Fringe episodes. I only wish I had more time to watch the rest of the season.

Fringe? Totally worth it. I've killed myself a few times over already just on the first season.

I guess I'll switch to movies and video games since those are apparently healthy activities whereas watching TV is not. I guess I'm just supposed to stare at the wall while I'm working out? Wouldn't want to get heart disease!

Hot damn! I've been watching TV for nearly all of my 33 years. That means I have...529980% chance of cardiovascular disease? Should I start working out now?

No! With your cardiovascular problems you could die at any second if you work out. Best to sit on the couch with cheetos and turn on the tube.

Well medical advances have increased our lifespans so it only makes sense that something must balance that out. Who wants to live forever anyway.

Yeah, but I don't want to die of some sort of disease. When I die, I want it to be of old age.
