Five ways to improve Dancing with the Stars

by Michael Pascua, posted Jan 13th 2010 9:00AM
Season nine winner Donny Osmond with his partner Kym JohnsonWith ABC confirming a tenth season of Dancing with the Stars on March 22, let's take a moment to realize several of the flaws with DWTS. Season nine popped up some very obvious problems. I'm not talking about ringers; there will always be someone who obviously has more potential than others. For example, the musician has rhythm, the athlete has endurance, and the actor can fake confidence. I accept that Samantha Harris isn't going anywhere.

I'm happy that DWTS hasn't added any judges like American Idol, and I don't mind judges ranking scores either. Here are five of the biggest pet peeves that Dancing with the Stars needs to fix.

1. Lessen the number of celebrities. Having 16 contestants is too many. I didn't even remember that Macy Gray or Ashley Hamilton were even on the show by week three. Luckily, ABC has listened and Steve McPherson claims that the most contestants this season will be twelve (season eight had thirteen). Here's hoping that the quality of the celebrities will go up because of it.

2. Cross-train celebrities. Louis van Amstel did something right with Kelly Osbourne: they did a mix of pilates and yoga to build core strength along with dancing. Cross-training Holly Madison would have definitely helped her chances, especially after heavy criticism for not being able to channel her core and being compared to a matchstick.

3. Fix choreography. I've been supportive of Chelsie Hightower since she was a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance, but I've been very disappointed with how she's handled her two celebrity partners, Ty Murray and Louie Vito. Instead of getting her partners involved, she dances around them. Chelsie is not the focus of the show, it's trying to get stars out of their comfort zones. She's not the only professional that does that, but she always ends up the most blatant. Also noteworthy is the fact that the professionals need to listen to the concerns of the stars. Dmitry totally ignored Mya's requests in the freestyle last season; that blunder may have been their demise.

4. No more atypical dances. The Texas Two-step was an interesting idea, but should probably never be seen again. Not only did all the stars that were given the two-step score low, the dance isn't very camera friendly. Let's not forget how similar the Lindy Hop is to the Jitterbug or how the Bolero and Rumba are insanely close. Group dances that aren't scored are one thing, but let's bring the scored dances back to the classics.

5. Keep the Dance-Offs consistent. If the show really wants to use the Dance-Off, use it every week. It adds value in the results show, while giving couples a second chance. I don't like when the dance-off shows up mysteriously in the middle of the season, only to disappear for a week and then return the next week (season eight) or only being around for two weeks (season nine). Have the couples learn two different dance-off dances before the show starts (one ballroom, one Latin), and if the couple ends up in the dance-off more than three times, let them pick which former dance they want to do over.

What are some other things that should be fixed? Leave your comments below.

I just love people's suggestions! I hope someone is reading this, because you guys have some great ideas! I know Samantha can be irritating, but please ease up on the poor woman. Sometimes people say such mean things about her. Imagine if she has to read what you say. Because she's uncomfortable, she does tend to ask embarrassing questions, but that might work well in some contexts--like journalism. And with her spectacular figure, she looks unbelievably good in those lovely frocks they keep finding for her. Now that DWTS has actually ended their association with her (and I think it's definitely for the best), I wish her well.

I have Judged a few contests and it is a lot easier to judge if every one dances the same dance but with different music, this also makes it easier for the public voting

1-Do not use a roc n roll tune for a Cha-Cha,Tango or Paso
2-no more Double eliminations there not fare.
3-no more than 14 contestents 7'Fe' and 7 'Ma'

I just want to say to the person or persons that said "Get rid of Bruno", if that happens, that will take away the flavor of the show. The reason why I say that is because there are some people out there that like him and think he's funny. Honestly, I think he's funny.

Fewer contestants, standard list of dances (ballroom and latin) and MOST OF ALL let the pro's put on a real number as they did in the beginning. SCD does it and it's like a Bob Fossy or Broadway appearance. No more milli-second glimpses then back to the singer, let's see some real dance productions by those fabulous pro's!!!!

1) Get rid of Samantha Harris. Unlike you, I'm not resigned to the idea that she's here to stay. Everyone I know hates her.

2) Don't use dances the judges are unfamiliar with. That just leads to even more blatant cases of favouritism.

3) Speaking of favouritism, if Len can't get over his biases, maybe he should move on. A significant part of the reason Mya and Dmitry lost last season was Len's consistent down-voting of them due to his dislike of Dmitry. Not to mention that there hasn't been a step invented in the last 35 years Len has any respect for.

4) More appropriate music-dance pairings. I watch with friends and have lost track of how many times we've looked at each other saying "They're dancing -what- to -that-?".

The dancers have a following, so keep that in mind when pairing up the couples. I know that I've become more interested in following a star's progress on the show when I am a fan of the dancer.

Get rid of Bruno. That's it. I can handle the C-list celebrities, unnecessarily long results shows, Samantha Harris' time filling interviews, etc. Just drop the attention-whoring Bruno.

I have to disagree about Chelsie. Ty was very much involved with the choreography & given how stiff & awkward he was Chelsie did a wonderful job choreographing for him. He didn't make it to 4th place because she danced around him. As for Louie, one of their dances was the two-step. Now I don't know about anyone else but any two step I've seen it's almost always focused on the woman. Not much she could have done with that.

As for the celebs, I like having the lesser knowns. Just because they aren't on network tv, or been in movies that everyone has seen does not mean they aren't a star. Louie Vito is a good example. He's a star in the field of snow boarding & Olympic hopeful. Sometimes the lesser knowns come out & surprise people.

Just because you have never heard of them doesn't mean they aren't a star.
