Five ways to improve Dancing with the Stars
With ABC confirming a tenth season of Dancing with the Stars on March 22, let's take a moment to realize several of the flaws with DWTS. Season nine popped up some very obvious problems. I'm not talking about ringers; there will always be someone who obviously has more potential than others. For example, the musician has rhythm, the athlete has endurance, and the actor can fake confidence. I accept that Samantha Harris isn't going anywhere.I'm happy that DWTS hasn't added any judges like American Idol, and I don't mind judges ranking scores either. Here are five of the biggest pet peeves that Dancing with the Stars needs to fix.
1. Lessen the number of celebrities. Having 16 contestants is too many. I didn't even remember that Macy Gray or Ashley Hamilton were even on the show by week three. Luckily, ABC has listened and Steve McPherson claims that the most contestants this season will be twelve (season eight had thirteen). Here's hoping that the quality of the celebrities will go up because of it.
2. Cross-train celebrities. Louis van Amstel did something right with Kelly Osbourne: they did a mix of pilates and yoga to build core strength along with dancing. Cross-training Holly Madison would have definitely helped her chances, especially after heavy criticism for not being able to channel her core and being compared to a matchstick.
3. Fix choreography. I've been supportive of Chelsie Hightower since she was a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance, but I've been very disappointed with how she's handled her two celebrity partners, Ty Murray and Louie Vito. Instead of getting her partners involved, she dances around them. Chelsie is not the focus of the show, it's trying to get stars out of their comfort zones. She's not the only professional that does that, but she always ends up the most blatant. Also noteworthy is the fact that the professionals need to listen to the concerns of the stars. Dmitry totally ignored Mya's requests in the freestyle last season; that blunder may have been their demise.
4. No more atypical dances. The Texas Two-step was an interesting idea, but should probably never be seen again. Not only did all the stars that were given the two-step score low, the dance isn't very camera friendly. Let's not forget how similar the Lindy Hop is to the Jitterbug or how the Bolero and Rumba are insanely close. Group dances that aren't scored are one thing, but let's bring the scored dances back to the classics.
5. Keep the Dance-Offs consistent. If the show really wants to use the Dance-Off, use it every week. It adds value in the results show, while giving couples a second chance. I don't like when the dance-off shows up mysteriously in the middle of the season, only to disappear for a week and then return the next week (season eight) or only being around for two weeks (season nine). Have the couples learn two different dance-off dances before the show starts (one ballroom, one Latin), and if the couple ends up in the dance-off more than three times, let them pick which former dance they want to do over.
