Here's the first look of Doctor Who in The Beatles

by John Scott Lewinski, posted Jan 14th 2010 9:06PM
Former Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston is playing John Lennon in a new movie.Who knew that The Beatles came from Gallifrey? OK. They didn't, but at least one of men behind The Doctor's various incarnations is portraying one of the music giants in a new BBC movie.

Christopher Eccleston is portraying the late John Lennon in the new Beeb movie, Lennon Naked. And, the network released the first look at Eccleston in character. The movie is set to air this year on BBC4 -- and (hopefully) soon after on a U.S. network.

Naked Lennon promises an inside look at Lennon after his departure from The Fab Four. Torchwood's Naoko Mori will play Yoko Ono.

As Eccleston, he's always good for a top-shelf performance -- but he's hard to figure out. He took on the role of The Doctor, calling it "the best role in British television." But, he left the part after one year, making way for David Tennant. Did Eccleston not get along with Russell T. Davies? Did he hate living in Cardiff? It's impossible to tell, but Eccleston moved on anyway.

After leaving Who, he took on roles in Heroes and the latest G.I. Joe movie. Now, he's Lennon. He seems like an actor who lives trying new things and resists being tied down to one part or franchise.

He most probably left the role of the Doctor to avoid head line like these. He has had many great roles prior to being the doctor for five minutes and I'm sure he did not want to be refered to as the Doctor. As much as i like him and think he is a good actor for heavy dramatic roles. He was not a great Doctor. David Tennent was much better suited for the role.

Christopher Eccleston never seems to play anyone in any different way. Some actors mould themselves into a role & it's easier to see them as the person, but he just seems to play characters as himself but with a different voice (although his Manc twang always comes through)

Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, but I think he's in the Clive owen school of acting

Most people probably don't realize the Beatles DID appear in Doctor Who. A 1965 serial with William Hartnell called "The Chase" (A Dalek story, no less) had the Beatles via a pre-taped appearance doing "Ticket to Ride".

I can't imagine this sequence will be there when it eventually gets released on DVD. :)

He seemed way too cool to be Dr. Who.

There was an episode near the end of his season (I think it was "Boom Town") where in the span of about 10 seconds he makes a transition from being jovial to completely menacing. It was done in a way that not only made perfect sense, it made me realize that he's a scary-good actor.
