Aziz Ansari's funny Intimate Moments
i funny. He was great on the offbeat sketch show Human Giant. I've come to enjoy him on the sitcom Parks and Recreation. But funny in sketch comedy and on a sitcom doesn't always translate to funny stand-up comedy. And since I'm admittedly more familiar with Ansari's other work than his stand-up, his one-hour stand-up special, Aziz Ansari: Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, was far from a sure thing. I am happy to report, though, that Intimate Moments completes the comedy trifecta. The special, which premieres on Comedy Central Sunday at 10 PM and hits stores in DVD and CD form Tuesday, is laugh out loud funny in several places. From the opening bit, where Ansari challenges an activist to kill for gay rights, to his stories about his cousin Darwish and Kanye West, there is a lot of smart, original material here. Fans of Human Giant won't be disappointed.
Ansari reminds me of a more aggressive, updated version of Mitch Hedberg, replacing the hippie with hip-hop. He has an off-kilter imagination and a highly stylized delivery that sometimes makes him sound like a nerdy kid trying to fit in at a Kanye show (which, in at least one routine, he is).
But his real-life stories might be the funniest things in his repertoire. I sincerely hope his story about messing with his cousin Harris's study group on Facebook are true (Harris is Darwish's younger brother). There's something endearing about the idea of a guy on a high-profile sitcom sparring with a bunch of 14-year-old high school students in Georgia.
There is an extra track on the CD, where Ansari indulges his character from the Adam Sandler movie Funny People, a comedian named RAAAAAAAANDY (you almost have to spell it and say it that way), but if you're not a fan of the movie, it might not make much sense to you.
Here's a bit of the special, about Ansari's attempt to get a small dish of vanilla at Cold Stone Creamery.
