'24': Who's REALLY Dead?

by Adam Keleman, posted Jan 16th 2010 3:00PM
'24,' a show known for cutting corners occasionally on time (Can Jack really get from the Valley to CTU in under 10 mins?), is still based on a real-to-life world; when a person gets shot, they usually are gone for good. That's what is so effective about its premise: Thoroughly developing characters that grab the attention of the audience, be it good or bad, and allow fate to run its deathly course.

There are times, though, when the details of a character's death are somewhat inconclusive, undoubtedly shrouded in mystery (What happened to Tony?!). So we took it upon ourselves to list some of our favorite deceased '24' characters, scrutinizing their untimely demise -- to see if things were how they seemed...or not.'24,' a show known for cutting corners occasionally on time (can Jack really get from the Valley to CTU in under 10 minutes?), is still based in a real-to-life world; when a person gets shot, they usually are gone for good. So we took it upon ourselves to list some of our favorite deceased '24' characters, scrutinizing their untimely demise -- to see if things were how they seemed...or not.

Name: President David Palmer
Job: President of The United States of America
Dead?: In the first episode of season 5, Palmer is assassinated in his apartment by an outside sniper.
Really, truly dead?: Unless that casket is empty, President Palmer is lying 6-feet underground in Arlington Cemetery.

Name: Tony Almeida
Job: Special Agent in Charge, CTU
Alive: Though shot and wounded by Jack and Renee at the end of season 7, Tony (fortunately?) still has a pulse.

Name: Michelle Dressler
Job: Special Agent in Charge, CTU
Dead?: Killed at the beginning of Season 5, Michelle triggers a planted car bomb as she opens her car door.
Really, truly dead?: Laying lifeless in Tony's arms, Michelle bit the bullet, permanently.

Name: Sherry Palmer
Job: First Lady
Dead?: Shot dead in season 3 by Wayne Palmer's lover Julia.
Really, truly dead?: Always the schemer, Sherry finally met her maker.

Name: Bill Buchanan
Job: Special Agent in Charge, CTU
Dead?: In the last episode of season 7, Jack is seen weeping over Bill's body.
Really, truly dead?: Setting off a bomb after he tackled one of General Juma's men, Bill was, sadly, obliterated in the explosion along with many others.

Name: Nina Myers
Job: Chief of Staff, CTU
Dead?: After cornered by Kim Bauer at the end of season 3, our favorite CTU-mole Nina is shot dead by Jack in the same room his wife Teri was killed in.
Really, truly dead?: Even with a bullet in her shoulder, Nina tried to weasel her way out; Jack soon finished the job, shooting her twice more, finally avenging his wife Teri's death.

Name: Teri Bauer
Job: Jack's wife
Dead?: Trying to escape capture, Teri is shot and killed by Nina.
Really, truly dead?: The first character to be given the "silent clock" treatment, Teri is found dead by a highly mournful Jack at the end of season 1.

Name: Philip Bauer
Job: Jack's Father, CEO of BXJ Technologies
Dead?: Left to die at the end of season 6 as F-18s shot down the oil rig.
Really, truly dead?: We're thinking the huge explosion sealed the deceitful "Papa" Bauer's fate.

Name: Curtis Manning
Job: Director of Field Operations, CTU
Dead?: As Curtis attempted to kill Assad at the end of season 6, Jack warns Curtis to put down his weapon, and then shoots him in the neck.
Really, truly dead?: When Jack shoots you, you're gone for good.

Name: Edgar Stiles
Job: Intelligence Analyst, CTU
Dead?: While trying to evacuate CTU in season 5, Edgar mistakenly entered a contaminated room filled with noxious Sentox gas.
Really, truly dead?: Only the 5th cast member to be honored with '24''s respectful "silent clock," the lovable Edgar will be fondly remembered.

Name: George Mason
Job: Special Agent in Charge, CTU
Dead?: Noticeably ill at the end of season 2, George climbed into the front seat of the plane while Jack escaped the ticking bomb on board.
Really, truly dead?: One of the few '24' cast members to almost die of natural causes, George sacrificed his life to save many as the bomb exploded midair.
