Review: Desperate Housewives - How About a Friendly Shrink?

(S06E13) "The number one rule to a successful dinner party: keep discussion about your marriage to a minimum." - Mary Alice

Let's face it, all the Wisteria Lane residents need some one-on-one time with a shrink. From past episodes, we know that Tom and Lynette need to discuss their issues with the loss of the baby, Lynette's need for control and Tom's frustrations; while Orson and Bree need to cope with her affair with Karl and Orson being in a wheelchair and acting like a spoiled brat. This week, we can add that Gaby and Susan need to get over their need for competition and accept their children as they are; Bob and Lee must deal with their marital problems; and Angie needs advice so she can let new people in her life, aka Ana as Danny's new girlfriend.

Out of our favorite Wisteria Lane residents, only five met with a shrink and that includes Katherine, whom we finally (!) get news of.

Bree and Orson

I'm already sick and tired of their storyline, aren't you? I'll sound like a broken record but I used to love Bree and Orson together until the writers wrecked their storyline and made me despise Orson to the point I wanted him off the show. I love Kyle MacLachlan but Orson has been a pain in the behind and things are getting worse every week.

The physical therapist was right when saying that some people cope with terrible events, such as now being stuck in a wheelchair, by sometimes being mean to the ones they loved and that, when they accept their fate, they get better. I don't believe Orson's meanness towards Bree is solely is coping mechanism. Orson acts like a spoiled brat and seems to be choosing his words and moments he makes request really carefully.

I get that he is in pain and that it must be terrible to one day be able to do everything by yourself, and the next you need someone to help you with the simplest task. But Bree was right in asking him to respect her and say please. He has been using her and it's affecting her morale. It wouldn't surprise me that sooner or later she gets a breakdown much bigger than the one she had this week when cleaning Orson with dishwasher soap and the water hose.

Tom and Lynette

Their storyline this week was fun and touching at the same time. Tom told Lynette last week that they needed to talk about the loss of the baby and everything else. She said no but he was right, they desperately needed it even if Lynette denied it all the way to the shrink's office.

Felicity Huffman definitely deserves an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Lynette, especially these past weeks. This week, I could feel her pain as Lynette reluctantly started talking to the shrink (played by Frasier's Jane Leeves) about what she was going through, how she was feeling and telling about her need to control things. It was a powerful scene. It will be interesting to see how the Scavos cope with the upcoming therapy sessions and how it'll affect them as a couple.

Angie, Ana and Danny

It wasn't a huge surprise that Angie didn't like Ana and was ready to do anything possible to break Danny and Ana up. What surprised me about this storyline is Lee's two cents about the situation, giving us a bit more details about his childhood, and Angie actually following Lee's suggestion to give Ana a chance. Then again, Angie doesn't want to lose Danny and breaking the couple up could mean alienating Danny...

Who knew that Ana had a soul down there? In retrospect, Ana is indeed a good fit for Danny as she understands what he is going through. Even if what Ana told Angie made the latter accept the couple a bit more, I'm sure we will see more Angie and Ana face offs in the future as Angie will try her best to keep Ana from learning the truth about the Bolens. I sense a May sweeps storyline here: Danny confides in Ana about who the Bolens really are and, for whatever reason, she tells the cops OR she doesn't tell the cops but Angie is able to have Danny spill out the beans that he told Ana, so the Bolens must either run away again or "take care" of Ana. In any case, the ending won't be a happy one. What is your crystal ball saying? Share your ideas in comments below.

Gaby and Susan

It was cute at first to see the two try to discover what the animal groups really meant but it got old soon. Once again, both characters needed to make fools of themselves in order to learn how to be moms and learn an important life lesson: love your kids the way they are. The writers need to be more creative with these two characters, no?

Bob and Lee

We finally got some backstory for them!!! I've been waiting for this tiny moment the day the two characters have been introduced. We learn that they are going to couple's therapy as they are having issues with one another. Bob thinks Lee isn't really working since he hasn't sold many houses lately. And Bob's mom didn't approve of Lee and made Bob choose between Lee and herself. He chose Lee, so there is some resentment there, too. I demand more Bob and Lee screen time and storylines! How about making them part of next season's mystery?

Katherine

I've missed Katherine, didn't you? Even if she was sent to the loony bin about three episodes ago, weeks have passed in the show since it happened. Therefore, she had weeks of one-on-one time with her shrink to analyze her actions and return to reality. She looked genuinely better. I don't believe she was faking it to her shrink, do you?

McCluskey comes to the rescue again! She may not be a main housewives but she is a key one. This time, she helped Katherine realize that she could return to Wisteria Lane and even convinced Lynette, Gaby, Bree, and Susan (!) to come see Katherine.

Even if they all embraced, when Katherine will return to Wisteria Lane things won't be peachy instantly. Some people, including the other housewives, will still walk on eggshells around Katherine until they feel they can trust her again. It'll be interesting to see how everyone copes with her return, including Katherine herself.

I truly hope that things work out for Katherine because she is one of my favorite characters and I don't want her to leave Wisteria Lane.

The problem with Felicity Huffman getting an Emmy is that they always stick Depserate Housewives in the comedy category. It may have comedic moments, but DH has never been a comedy. If they stick her in the comedy category Huffman's destined to lose, probably to the ever boring Tina Fey.
