Once again, Jack Bauer is getting pulled reluctantly into the thrills and dangers that make up the world of '24.' This time, he seemed genuinely happy to put the past behind him and move on to a new life with his daughter and granddaughter in Los Angeles, but fate clearly had other plans for him, and happiness is never in the cards for Jack Bauer.

The day began with Victor Aruz bleeding all over Jack's doorstep. He'd been involved in an assassination plot on President Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor) of the fictional Middle Eastern country of Kamistan. Hassan was in New York at the United Nations to finalize an agreement with President Taylor (Cherry Jones) that would see his country abandon nuclear armament and sign a peace accord to establish lasting peace in the Middle East.

Jack had no choice but to contact the New York branch of CTU to hand Aruz over to them. After all, he's retired now, as he reminded Aruz with a gun to his head. Of course the hand-over went wrong, illuminating some idiocy on the part of Brian Hastings, the boss at CTU. Head of Field Ops Cole Oritz (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) recommended a secondary chopper to provide back-up for the rooftop pick-up of Aruz, but Hastings shut him down. The helicopter was destroyed by the hired assassin, Davros, taking down two CTU agents, as well as his target: Aruz.

All Jack got out of Aruz before he died was that there was someone close to Hassan who was working for the other side. When evidence of stolen UN files, as well as a large encrypted file turned up on Meredith Reed's computer at her home, Hastings and Walsh jumped right on it, ready to take down the insider and end the plot. But Chloe O'Brien sensed that it was all a bit too easy. Unfortunately, no one was listening to her and Reed was detained to be transported to CTU for questioning.

Chloe had only been back at CTU for a few months, since Morris lost his job. It created an interesting new dynamic for her, as she's generally the "know-it-all" looking down her nose at the other techs, but with the speed of technological advances, it was all she could do to navigate the current systems, much less master them. This led to her being less respected and acknowledged by those around her than she was used to.

Jack reluctantly returned to CTU to be debriefed by Chloe, who immediately took advantage of the opportunity to explain her theory to Bauer. She found surveillance of Davros, though she didn't know who he was, going into Reed's apartment just before her computer hacked into the UN servers, and leaving shortly thereafter.

With Reed detained, President Hassan's brother Farhad got him to admit to having an affair with the reporter. He then urged Hassan to lie about it should he ever be asked, which was more likely with her in custody now. After this conversation, Farhad contacted the assasin Davros to update him, revealing himself as the traitorous insiders. If Omar denied the affair, than anything else Reed said would be discredited, keeping CTU on a wild goose chase while Davros finished the deed.

Jack tried to get Hastings to consider Chloe's theory, showing him the surveillance photos, but Hastings had his suspect, and he was going to pour all his attention into her. Jack was ready to walk away from it, but in a dramatic change of pace, it was Kim Bauer who convinced her father to go back into CTU and help Chloe find the real plot. She knew that if Jack did nothing, and then Hassan was murdered, Jack would never forgive himself knowing he might have been able to make a difference.

Jack convinced Hastings to let him track down the man alone, with Chloe on hand for tactical support.. The hour ended with Davros holding a coworker at the New York Police Department, and his wife hostage, ordering the man to call in sick to work so that Davros, who'd been posing as an officer as well, could take his place on the U.N. detail for the night, thus gaining access to Hassan.
