Southland's Ben McKenzie loves the cancelling of Jay Leno

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jan 19th 2010 7:04AM
The whole Jay Leno/Conan O'Brien shakeup may have the rest of the world crying like jilted prom queens, but it's got one man grinning from ear to ear. And no, it's not Jeff Zucker. That would be more of a giant, belly shaking James Bond villain laugh.

Ben McKenzie, the man who tore into Jay Leno and his former network for pushing his cop drama Southland out of its time slot when Jay moved into primetime, has said he's happy The Jay Leno Show is going out of commission.

While he says that Leno is a "great guy," it still doesn't change his sentiments that he's "glad it failed...Things have worked out in a good way."

I'm sure Conan seconds those thoughts. That should make his first interview on Fox's Up Late at Night with Conan O'Brien especially awkward when he goes on it to promote Southland on TNT.

This whole situation is wishy washy. this all started because Leno wanted to retire to be more with his family. NBC hemm hawd around, offered this and that to the others and still gave Leno his own show because that's what he himself asked for. No one can replace Johnny Carson, I don't care what ya say. We all forget, we didn't like Leno for the first year either, we just got use to seeing him in Carson's chair. Leno's show went down in flames because he had to watch his mouth and couldn't tell his off colored jokes or simulate what we were all thinking because of the time slot. At 10pm there are still alot of youngsters still up at that time. We can't help who we think is funny or not, it's like talking politics or religion, everyone has their own opinion. And ther's 3 things you never talk about, 1) politics 2) religion and 3) driving...yes yes driving, cuz everybody thinks they are better drivers than the next person!!!! hahahaha

I agree. Letterman sucks and I think it's the flitty little band leader. I think they do each other.

What I question is the fact that NBC and everyone made a decision 5 years ahead for the step-down of Leno and move-up of Conan. It turns out that was too much lead-time. Trying to salvage the results of that decision has been very chaotic, expensive, and upsetting for the networks, the shows and the audience. How sad for everyone.

I vote Mario Lopez for the Tonight Show. He's hot, and more interesting than Conan, Leno, Letterman, and Fallon combined. None of them are funny, just raunchy. I didn't really care for Carson either, but I have to admit his talent cannot be emulated.

Take away the 'reality shows', the talk shows and what's left?

Exactly! Not much. The networks are operating under the delusion that if something isn't an 'instant' hit, then it should be cancelled. Leno had no place in primetime, but as usual the network idiots made the decision, based on what? We'll never know for sure, but at least the affiliates were able to finally convince NBC to reverse course. Too bad NBC doesn't listen to the viewers. Gee, what a concept...listen to the viewers? Tells me that they think we are all idiots like them. Well, they're wrong....again!

Jay is an idiot. He's not funny, and does horrible interviews. Conan is absolutely hilarious. Any younger viewer out there that I know loves Conan, and it's ridiculous NBC is getting rid of him. They are making a HUGE mistake. Jay is going to lose a huge audience because he can't make up his damn mind about quitting his show. Conan didn't do anything wrong, Jay just realized he was bombing and wanted to take his old show back that HE HAD GIVEN UP!!! He's gonna get killed from Letterman now, and I hope when Conan gets on Fox, he kills both of them in ratings....Team Coco all the way!!!!
