Review: White Collar - Hard Sell

White Collar
(S01E08) "Hold on. I've never seen someone die before." - bad guy, watching Neal and Peter slowly suffocate.

So the question that all White Collar fans have about this episode is whether or not they answer the big cliffhanger question from the fall finale. And that question, of course, is this: will Neal Caffrey wear a stylish hat this episode?

OK, so that's not the big question that fans want asked. They want to know what it meant when Peter was in the hotel room with Kate, wearing the ring, looking all bad guy-ish. Did the show explain that in this episode? Read on...

When this episode first started, I thought it was going to be one of those deals where a TV show has a daring, shocking finale and then in the next episode they sort of refer to it but, in general, leave fans wondering and guessing about what is going on while they go ahead with the "con of the week" plots (in this case, Neal going undercover at a sleazy boiler room operation).

But then halfway through the episode, they not only had Neal and Moz talking about Neal getting enough money to run away (since he no longer had the ankle bracelet tracker for this assignment), it also had Neal confronting Peter about the ring and Kate. I'm glad they addressed it so bluntly. So we now know the ring is an FBI ring. A lot of them have those rings, and Kate admitted that the bad guy really was Fowler after all. Peter was trying to tell Kate to stay away from Neal ("he's a friend ... he's the smartest person I ever met"). So Peter is still a good guy!

And now we have a new plot: Neal has to find a special music box that Kate and Fowler want. But is Fowler controlling Kate or is Kate really bad herself? That will fuel the second half of the season.

As for this week's plot: I knew that the special comic book room had a security system, but I loved how it played out: Peter rushing in to save Neal, the bullet-proof door coming down, the portable air, the whole scene played silently instead of with loud music and frantic editing. It showed that Neal really can trust Peter still. I think if I was in that situation and I had the bad guys looking at me, waiting for me to collapse, I would have started to destroy the guy's precious comic book collection. It probably would have made him open the doors and rush in and try to stop me. I think I saw the first Superman comic there on the wall. That's worth a lot of money.

More thoughts

- I still wonder why Kate looks so much like Elizabeth. Is there a reason for that or just the way they cast the roles and it's only a coincidence that they look so much alike?

- One of the things that puts this show several notches above most action-dramas is the style. The scene I mentioned above in the comic book room is one example, and also the scene outside the mansion with the gang skeet-shooting. Nice touches.

- Not sure why I've started to calling the characters "Neal" and "Peter" when in past reviews I've called them "Caffrey" and "Burke."

- USA's promo for their dramas talks about how there are still good shows to watch at 10pm. They don't use the words "unlike NBC," but NBC owns the network.

- Did you like the explanation for Peter being with Kate and the ring?

I disagree that Kate admitted it was Fowler who was the bad guy. When Peter said Fowler, her initial response was "Who?" Then when he says tell Fowler I know, her response is "Don't push him" The him there could be Fowler, Neal or someone completely different. I'm thinking Fowler is more likely just a hired gun for someone much higher up in the FBI.

Also, they talk about meeting once before 5 years ago, which makes it sound like Kate is the reason Peter caught Neal in the first place. So, I'm wondering if he sent her in to "fall in love with him" or they were already together and used something he had against her (maybe this is where the similarities in Kate and Elizabeth come in to play) to force her hand.

Not only do Kate and Elizabeth look a like, but they share the same features as Neal...dark hair, blue eyes. Is this also a coincidence? There has to be something relevant about dark hair, blue-eyed features, but what? Now that I think about it, June's granddaughter also has blue eyes.

I think WC is a smart, well written series. I was excited the audience was given a plausible resolution to the fall finale cliffhanger - this means we can move on to bigger story questions & I hope moving away from the chase of Kate. Dare I say it's boring, unless it continues to lead Neal down the path of walking the line between his old and new life.

What about Mozzie? Is he working with Kate to steal Neal's stash of goods?

I am glad they pretty much didn't have a twist at all. I did not like the idea of where that twist would have taken the show and how it would have maligned Peter's character. Now we can move on with the show and there is a new and very interesting plot device. @VP I agree with the Life and USA idea. I loved Life, it was a great show with compelling characters. It would have fit perfectly into USA's line up and I think if they switched from shooting in LA to somewhere else, probably could have afforded to keep the same quality under USA budgets. I don't know why more shows which have failed on network TV but were still more successful than most cable TV shows aren't picked up. Terminator: SCC should be picked up by SyFy, as well as Jericho, Dollhouse, and Pushing Daisies. USA should pick up Life, someone should notify them of that.

Not only am I troubled about Kate and Elizabeth resembling each other,. Elizabeth is a dead ringer for Ellie on Chuck...anyone else see that?"

Oh, they are all related. "Chuck" is an NBC show. There will be a big two part cross-over ep for the May sweeps. ;D
Seriously though, it is sort of weird isn't it? Maybe the same casting agent/agency for both shows? Does anyone know?

Maybe. After all, Matt Bomer played a recurring character on Chuck.

I liked the resolution because I like Peter and I like the friendship and trust between Peter and Neal.

If the suppression system worked the way they said it did, only a space suit would save their lives...ah, artistic license...

Bob, thanks for bringing up the Kate/Elizabeth thing -- I've been wondering if I was the only person bothered by that.

It's one of those things that people would surely notice in real life, so they can't ignore it. Given the sheer number of capable actresses available, it can't be a coincidence either.

I could be proved completely wrong on this, but I'm not sure I'm sold on Peter's explanation of his meeting with Kate. When they showed the flashback, they tinted the whole scene a kind of yellow-ish color. It just felt off to me, as if they were hinting that this may not be accurate.

We'll see how it all plays out, I guess. That's not to say that Peter is the bad guy; it actually might be someone else. That's just my way of saying what he told Neal may not be 100% accurate.

John, I'm with you. My wife disagrees, but I also interpreted that odd color tone in the meeting between Kate and Peter to suggest that we may see a different version of that meeting in the future. I think we're supposed to think Peter is a good guy right now, but I'm not convinced they won't toy with us on the subject as the show goes on.

I definitely like the explanation and really the only one they could do without it changing their overall relationship. And it's not really weird or confusing, so it also gets a passing grade from me.

The only wrinkle I have about this whole thing is does it really make sense for Neal, who is the "smartest person" that Peter and all of us know, NOT know that the ring was an FBI ring? I mean it's not exactly a ring for a Super Secret Society. Sure he knows every other thing, except for that. Convenient.

I love the twist in the plot that the explanation of last seasons cliffhanger gave. Kate a bad person? Who is handling whom ? And the fact that Peter is still the good guy.

And the fact that Neal and Peter still have a shared enemy in Fowler.

Should make for an interesting season!
