What You Missed Last Night: the first promo for Leno's return to The Tonight Show

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 20th 2010 8:01AM
OK, so it's from David Letterman, but still, it's a promo! Letterman ran this last night.

What I love about it is not only how they point out what Leno took from other shows for The Tonight Show, but they got ex-Tonight Show announcer Edd Hall to do the voiceover!

Leno is coming back. Letterman will go back to his #2 spot. And after Conan's ratings on the Tonight Show, he'll be lucky if he gets another shot anywhere and he'll be lucky if anyone remembers his name in two years. All these sour grapes about Leno. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.

NBC is and always has been the real culprit behind all of this mess. Since back in 1992 when Johnny Carson retired, NBC had the only real late night talk shows and probably better than 65% of all Network viewers. Had they been smart they would have moved Letterman into Carson's spot and followed that up with either Leno or if e didn't want it Conan. Simple equation Letterman was already backing up Carson so the viewwing audience would have taken that as the expected turn of events. If they had done that the audience would not have been sliced up between Leno, Letterman, and later Kimmel, and now maybe a fourth show on FOX with Conan. What a mess, all allowed by NBC's stupidity, they had it all.

TV ratings are the proof of the pudding. Jay Leno had the highest ratings & largest audiences on late nite comedy. Letterman can slam Leno all he wants, but it reflects his bitterness loosing out to Jay.

Letterman may be bitter, but everything in that comedic piece is true. The Leno lovers here won't admit that, so they have say Letterman is bitter. They won't address the fact that Leno is creatively bankrupt.

Most of what Leno has been doing came from Johnny Carson when he did the show. David Letterman is a dirty old hypocrite. After what was revealed about him last year (and I'm sure it isn't the first dirty deed he has (and probably still doing) done). No matter, these entertainers are paid way to much money considering they contribute NOTHING constructive to the health and well being of this nation. It is time we citizens stand up and stop giving them so much pedastal to stand on.

Jay is a dumbed down version of Letterman. Perfect for the dumbed downed viewers. Letterman is for the intelligent viewer who uses their brain. Conan is for the kids. Pick whomever you want, that's your choice. Dave has no problem making fun of himself. That is another thing that makes him better, his ego doesn't get in the way. Jay is ok... but... just not as good as Dave. NBC execs are the true idiots. They prove that daily.

Letterman "Tonight Show promo spoof" forgot to add .... and "there go my ratings again to being #2 --- or worse."

Haven't you folks ever heard of Tivo or a DVR? You don't have to stay up until 1:30 to see a show. Get some sleep and keep your job.

Am I wrong or did Jay Leno announce he was retiring from the tonight show? I'm pretty sure that's how this whole thing started.

Of course Letterman doesn't want Jay back. Jay beat his ratings for years. When Conan took over the Tonight Show, he could not beat Letterman. Does it make sense that Dave would want Jay back? He is such a hypocrite for acting as if he cares about Conan. Dave should have been fired when the sexual harrassment situation came out. Instead, his ratings went up. What does this say about humanity? He is a vicious, nasty man and not funny at all. As to Conan, if everyone was so crazy about him and he was so funny, why were his ratings so low?
