NBC planned it all along

by Brad Trechak, posted Jan 21st 2010 11:30AM
Jay LenoWe all know about the NBC late-night issues going on right now. David Letterman is having a field day with them. What we suspected but didn't know is that apparently, like the Cylons, NBC had a plan.

The plan was that in the event Conan's ratings for The Tonight Show didn't work out, they would replace him with Jay Leno. That's why they wanted to keep Jay Leno around. Now, the actual reason for the switch back was that Leno's 10 P.M. ratings tanked and Conan didn't want to start The Tonight Show at a time that even fewer people would watch, but the end result is the same.

Comparing the executives of a network to a fictional cybernetic race bent on the destruction of humanity isn't completely fair, but it's close enough. A closer analogy would be if the Cylons were being led by the WWE's Vince McMahon. And like Vince McMahon before him, Jeff Zucker can turn around and say (based on their offer of a post-midnight Tonight Show): "NBC didn't screw Conan. Conan screwed Conan."

I have a hard time believing Jeff Zucker can plan what he's going to have for lunch.

Why does everyone think that Conan would have magically gotten better had he been given 2 years?

When he goes to Fox, and he gets even crappier ratings and Fox cans him after a year, will the Coco lovers say, "But Fox didn't give him a chance!" He will at that point have had 7 months with NBC, PLUS lets say a year with Fox. If 18 months, with all the shows that entails, is not enough time to build an audience, what is???

How does one account for the rest of NBC's horrible schedule? They haven't come up with anything original in years.

Prediction: Leno will host the Tonight Show at least until he's in his 90s. He'll never retire. Ever.

Oh come on, people always say "it was all part of our secret plan" after the fact in a vain attempt at making themselves look less stupid. The sad thing is that usually people pull the "secret plan" act after something goes RIGHT. For NBC to say it was their "plan" to not allow Conan time to build an adience or allow his show to grow and immediately dump him and put back the Chin Monster as soon as the ratings didn't match what they were with Chin Monster's show (which had a well-established audience built over the past decade) doesn't make them look smart, it makes them look like petty, cheap assholes.

Which they undoubtedly are. You'd think they'd want to hide that fact, not flaunt it.

If they allowed Conan to build an audience and succeed, eventually becoming Number 1 in 2-3 years, THEN nbc could break out the "it was our secret plan" routine. "We knew Conan would eventually build an audience and rule his timeslot, so it was our plan to put him there and keep him there all along." Some people might even believe that one.

Enjoy the hypothetical .001 cent near-term rise in your stock price, NBC. And enjoy the 8,552nd car in your garage, Leno.

Jackfucks.

Oh, so this is the New Coke excuse. Urban myth is the the Coca-Cola Company introduced New Coke with the intention of re-introducing Coca-Cola Classic to great fanfare. That was their plan all along. Genius!

Right. It's not like we all love Jay. Far from the truth.

So is Conan O'Brien going to be the first member of the "Jeff Zucker Kiss My Ass Club"?

Loved the Vince McMahon/Bret Hart analogy.

That is a bit unfair. The NBC executives aren't bent on the destruction of humanity, just the destruction of NBC
