Price is Right contestant loses a Porsche in heartbreaking fashion

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 21st 2010 5:23PM
When you go on The Price is Right and make it all the way to the Showcase, you don't expect to be bidding on a Porsche Boxster. So, when Jeffery, a contestant on yesterday's episode, got a chance to make his bid, he went for it, giving an amazingly knowledgeable-sounding bid of $58,500.

As you can see in the clip below, the results didn't exactly go in his favor. But it's not like he lost the Porsche by wildly over- or under-bidding; he was right about the price. He just wasn't right enough:

Note a couple of things about the video: The producers, knowing how heartbreaking the loss was, allowed everyone, including the audience, to react before carting him off and playing the upbeat music for the winner. The reaction of Jeffery's opponent, Joshua, is also telling, as he's so disheartened over Jeffery's loss that he doesn't even realize that he won his showcase.

Also credit Drew Carey for building some anticipation and drama. Looks like they guy's becoming a bona-fide game show host before our very eyes, isn't he?

I'm still rolling over over that show some 2 weeks later! No one has come that close like that with going over on a showcase on such an extravagant prize like the Porsche! That he was off by $176 is rare, yet remarkable. Most other contestants have missed off by embarrassing $20,000 differences on those sports car-themed showcases. And they even showed him still shocked with his overbid as he walked back in the audience. Drew's long pause was dramatic--he didn't want to blurt out the bid--he took his time before announcing the price of the showcase. The producers were smart not blasting the music to let the contestant and the audience take the shock of the overbid. Even Joshua, who won his showcase, was shocked and hugged Jeffrey. Drew handled that excellently despite Jeffrey's overbid.

The show of the price is right has alot of DUMB games as far as winning cars. They sure do not make it easy.

Where can you get a Porsche and a trip to Vegas for $58,000. Last time I checked, Porsche's cost twice that much.

I have watched TPIR for years and I have never seen it stop suddenly when it is spinning fast as Lori said. I don't like Drew Carey as well as I did Bob Barker but I still watch it.

Why is Drew Carey still on? He is clearly not the right guy for this job. He is underwhelming. He looks and sounds uncomfortable. OK he is no Bob Barker but the models dont have to worry about having to boink him to keep their jobs. But the show is just plain awkward.

If you don't like TPIR then don't complain and turn the channel ?

How much longer do we have to put up with Drew Carey. He has no charisma at all. He needs to watch Bob Barkers episodes and learn how to be a host. I can't understand him half the time and he screams the contests names when they are called down...repeating himself. He is the worse host I have ever seen...Where is Mario Lopez?
