I won't miss Jersey Shore

jersey_shore_mtvLast night was the wrap up for Jersey Shore. I have to tell you, I won't miss it. Unlike many others who were drawn in to Jersey Shore, the show never grew on me. The MTV reality show got an inordinate amount of media coverage. It became the butt of jokes all over the place, the perfect gag line. It was controversial and insulting to the actual people who love and live on the Jersey Shore.

But the show is horrible. Truly, deeply and utterly horrible. I watched it to see what the fuss was all about, but after ten minutes, I had had enough. It wasn't funny or goofy or even car-wreck compelling. It was just dumb. Even with the subtitles, I could barely understand them.

Since then I've thought about it and I don't think it's an age thing that made me detest Jersey Shore. I'm not immune to the Real World style shows on MTV, and those kids are just as young at the Situation and Snooki -- probably younger.

I'm also not adverse to reality TV like a lot of other people are. I've kept up with the Real Housewives and even spent a Saturday afternoon checking out the Kardashians, even though they are contrived beyond belief.

So why was Jersey Shore such a turn off for me? Maybe it was the fact that the group of them are so aggressively ignorant. They're volatile, too, and wont to violence. Putting that ramshackle gang together in a vacation house was bound to be explosive. Add booze and whatever to the mix and you have the makings of antics that make Big Brother look like a Boy Scout Jamboree.

I think the point of television is to appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes, so there is room for the likes of Jersey Shore. I read a blog that compared Jersey Shore to an indulgent vacation in which all the things you shouldn't do, you did. That's probably a lot of the appeal. That said, it hit a lot of people in a familiar way. I just wasn't one of them. But that's okay.
