Liza Minnelli will get all dramatic on Ugly Betty

by Allison Waldman, posted Jan 23rd 2010 3:00PM
liza_minnelli_red_sweaterWhen Liza Minnelli guests on Ugly Betty will the cast be channeling their inner Glee? You know, do a song or dance or two? That's my wish! Miss Liza is reportedly slated to appear in a coming episode as a drama teacher who has a profound effect on Justin, Betty's nephew.

Justin, as anyone who follows the show knows, is already a theater fiend. In fact, Ugly Betty as a show has been very musical-friendly (kind of like Pushing Daisies was before ABC pulled the plug).

There was the terrific Wicked themed episode that included the song, "I'm Not that Girl," and another episode in which Justin was stuck on a subway with his parents and enacted "Good Morning, Baltimore" from Hairspray.

So, is it possible that with Liza Minnelli on the show Ugly Betty might cue the orchestra and strike up the band? The character she's playing is Lena Korvinka, Justin's high school drama teacher who is -- according to one report -- an outrageous character. Sounds like it's right up Liza's alley!

Although ABC has not confirmed the casting, it's no secret that the show has been courting Liza for well over a year. And that was before Ugly Betty was a ratings disaster. Now, I can't help thinking that a Minnelli appearance might be their way to attract some attention. Maybe all the Arrested Development fans will tune in to see what Lucille Austero's like when she's not beset by vertigo.

Once Ugly Betty showed me that there was only air between her ears when it came to political matter in real life, I decided her TV life wasn't worth watching. However, I'll bet the viewing audience is more than -1.

OH god no - not the screamer (Liza). What could Liza Minelli possibly bring to Ugly Betty? It's bad enough that Betty still has braces on after years at a high end fashion magazine. Duh! Not to mention the worst taste in clothes we've ever seen. We get that "Ugly Betty" is, supposed to be Ugly. No contest there. But, come on, writers - give her a little gumption and some brains to figure out that she looks like crap and should be working at Ross For Less if she contines to stick her head in the sand and not catch on to what's going on around her. She's apparently supposed to be smart. Why, then, does she continue to have such bad taste in clothes (and teeth)

Nice info. Betty's been better in 10pm slot as far as I've seen. Liked last show using the Hell's Kitchen type walkup
dwellers, being long time one myself. Maybe the City wide
blackout was a bit of a dodge but what the hey if it plays well to out of town market.
The couples therapy also good touch. Maybe went thru the baby issue slickly but this kind of show doesn't need to drag
that routine once again. Stick to the main characters climbings and Big Town special doings. There's plenty of that
material to keep it lively w/o going middle class.
Glad to see ABC giving show a further shot. TV needs
pop stylings along with al the crime dramas.

Ah Arrested Development. I was so happy when the seal attack was paid off with the joke "Loose Seal!"
