Damages Season 3 PremiereSeason three of the hit FX show 'Damages' premieres Monday, Jan. 25, at 10 PM ET. The legal thriller has a history of making us think things are going one way, and then spinning the story in a completely different direction.

The season two finale is a good example of that. All season long, we'd been teased about a showdown between Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne). But did it turn out the way you thought it would?

If you haven't watched season two yet, read no further. Spoilers after the jump.Damages Season 3 PremiereSeason three of the hit FX show 'Damages' premieres Monday, Jan.

But the final scenes showed Patty being stabbed in the elevator by Finn Garrity, before she even went to Ellen's room. That's where all the blood was coming from; it was Patty's blood from the stabbing, not from a gunshot fired by Ellen.

In fact, that gunshot seared over Patty's head and into the surveillance camera behind her, so that Ellen could get the truth out of Patty. "I was afraid," she told Ellen. "I didn't trust you. You knew too much about me, so I told Pete to have you killed."

Meanwhile, Wes killed Detective Messer, because he couldn't kill Ellen and he knew Messer would. And as usual, Patty was playing everyone. She had Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan) in her pocket all along, working with his sister in the U.S. Marshall's office to bring down Walter Kendrick. The whole thing was a magnificent elaborate setup, ending with Ellen at David's graveside, telling him she's in a relationship and has found a new job.

In season three, Hewes and Associates is working on a case for the government to recover billions of dollars stolen by the powerful Tobin family. It's a ripped-from-the-headlines story that somewhat mirrors Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Meanwhile, Ellen has a new job at the D.A.'s office, but her boss is also investigating the Tobin family.

Damages Season 3, Lily TomlinAs with the out-of-the-box casting of Ted Danson as Arthur Frobisher, we've got some interesting new faces in season three. Lily Tomllin plays Marilyn Tobin, the matriarch of the family that Patty is going after; Campbell Scott plays son Joe Tobin; and Martin Short plays the family's attorney, Leonard Winstone. Others appearing this season include Reiko Aylesworth, Len Cariou, Keith Carradine, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

We'll also take a look at Ellen's backstory, including her parents and sister. As season three begins, Ellen hasn't spoken to Patty in six months, but their lives will continue to be entangled. "Patty doesn't get under her skin anymore," Byrne said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. "But the complexity of their relationship is definitely something that we still kind of end up exploring throughout the season."

Be forewarned that a major character dies at the beginning of the season. We won't tell you who it is, because that would just be wrong. Even so, the character gets a good run throughout the season via flashbacks.

Here are a few clips to get you revved up for Monday's premiere. Feel free to leave your predictions and theories in the comments below.
