The woman who was once the intangible object of desire for Opus the Penguin in the 'Bloom County' comic strip is now delivering the 'World News' -- and the ratings -- for ABC.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Diane Sawyer's new position as head anchor of ABC's 'World News' has had an almost immediate effect on the show's ratings. Since Sawyer took over four weeks ago, the evening newscast has averaged 8.8 million viewers, a spike of about 8 percent over its season-to-date average. Sawyer's debut appearance on Dec. 21st averaged 8.97 total viewers, whereas Charles Gibson's final broadcast on Dec. 18th took in 8.96.The woman who was once the intangible object of desire for Opus the Penguin in the 'Bloom County' comic strip is now delivering the 'World News' -- and the ratings -- for ABC.

Sawyer assumed her position as head anchor on 'World News' last month after 11 years of hosting 'Good Morning America.' Sawyer hit the ground running and has applied her renowned dedication and hands-on approach to a recent visit to Haiti and a trip to Copenhagen to confront Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about his nuclear ambitions.

While ABC's 'World News' is doing well under Sawyer's command, the newscast is still the "middle child," trailing behind NBC's 'Nightly News,' which brought in over 10 million viewers the week of Jan. 11th, but ahead of 'CBS Evening News,' which had 6.7 million viewers.

It looks like ABC made the right choice by letting Diane Sawyer sleep in a little bit.
