Leno talks to TMZ about Conan, Letterman, and the Masturbating Bear

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 25th 2010 3:30PM
The ever-present TMZ caught up with Leno getting out of his car the other night (they always seem to catch him getting out of a car) and they asked him about Conan's last show, whether he'll use the Masturbating Bear (that's supposed to be capitalized, right?), and what he thinks of David Letterman.

Leno also says that he hasn't spoken to Conan at all since this whole thing started, and that tells you a lot.

And I might add, it was cheaper to fire Conan, than Jay.
Jay's contract would have cost NBC much more to have not given Jay the Tonight Show back.

1) It is all about money.
2) It was cheaper to fire Conan than Jay.
3) Jay will get the ratings back up.
4) It is a win-win for NBC.

The idea that The Tonight Show was going to be pushed back to 12:05 was a fabricated story to allow O'Brien step down as a hero. NBC was never going to change The Tonight Show timeslot. By fabricating this whole story about a timeslot move, it allowed O'Brien to release a publicly addressed letter saying how he cares too much about the franchise to move the show. Thus allowing him to "save-face" and step down with dignity. It is my hope that TMZ can shed light on the truth. As I cannot.

Hey Mike: Once again (maybe you'll understand this time?) the NBC affiliates didn't say anything about Conan's Tonight Show. The NBC affiliates wanted "The Jay Leno Show" taken off the air. It was "The Jay Leno Show" that was lousy. It was "The Jay Leno Show" that was canceled. It was Jay Leno who was given 5 hours of PRIME TIME television on a major network and FAILED MISERABLY at it. The NBC affiliates were fine with Conan and were willing to wait out a long period of time for him to find his 11:30 audience. Conan didn't fail. LENO FAILED.

Conan's show tanked with half the viewers. Whatever Jay was doing is not in that discussion. The advertisers who pay wanted something to justify the bucks. I do not understand the tone of poor Conan, no one calls him. Geez. These are two adults. Either one could call. One guy is/will be on the air. The other has gone away and accepted the cash. The game was played and we have a winner. Just because you back a losing team doesn't mean you can rewrite the results. The affiliates will be much more accepting of a show brings viewers to their affiliation. Maybe you'll understand it this time.

Mike, this situation was not created because advertisers were pulling away from The Tonight Show. It's because the affiliate stations were losing their 11pm news audience (the affiliates' most important show) because The Jay Leno Show was a horrible lead-in. From there, NBC tried to push everyone back instead of just getting rid of Leno. Conan didn't want any part of pushing The Tonight Show out of its perpetual 11:30 timeslot and having it and himself play second fiddle to The Jay Leno Show.

Ah, the web site that's all Conan all the time.
I had not heard that Conan became a mute and was resticted from the telephone. He's the one whose show was in the dumps. He coulda called Jay just as easily. And that tells you a lot.

Let's see...

Jay's show tanked, Jay was approached about taking back late night before any discussion was had with Conan, Jay said yes when he didn't have to, Jay's been playing the "I'm an innocent pawn in all this" card, and you expect Conan to make the overtures?

I suppose it does make sense, given that Conan's the one who's been being a class act throughout the whole thing.

If you were fired and replaced with the office suck-up, would you call the suck up and wish him luck?

You know why they always catch Jay Leno coming out of cars?

Because he has so many!

Seriously, he probably just parks all of them from his house to his studio and is able to just walk through one door into the other.

And you guys are right. Though celebrities may hate TMZ and the paparazzi, you know they must secretly love them -- because not only do they give them the attention all celebrities must crave at some level but also because they make them seem like both humanitarians AND geniuses. Those guys would make Charlie Sheen and Tiger Woods at a Hooters seems like gentleman.

Wow. You succeeded in finding a clip where I find Jay Leno the most likable person speaking. Those TMZ guys are the worst---imagine if they were given The Tonight Show. Those interviews would be something.
