Fred Willard and Swoosie Kurtz to Guest on 'Chuck'

fred_willard_swoozie_kurtz_fox_abcGuest stars can be a good thing... or a bad thing. Some shows handle it better than others, incorporating the usually familiar stars into the episode(s) for maximum effect. The recent turn by Robert Wagner on 'NCIS' was an example of a terrific guest appearance.

Speaking of Robert Wagner, you're probably aware that he starred on the much-loved ABC's romantic detective series 'Hart to Hart' with Stephanie Powers. Now, two other stars will be playing a 'Hart to Hart' type of couple on a current show. Swoozie Kurtz and Fred Willard will be on 'Chuck' later this season as a pair of former spies who were romantically involved. 'Hart to Hart' was mentioned in Michael Ausiello's scoop, and he even went so far as to suggest a spin-off.

That might be overdoing it, although there isn't much that Fred Willard and Swoozie Kurtz can't do. They're award-winning actors for a reason. But demographically speaking, NBC wouldn't cast two over-50s in an action-oriented show like 'Chuck.' A guest spot, yes. A series, no.

However, the 'Hart to Hart' reference may be off. The Harts were detectives, and clearly inspired by William Powell and Myrna Loy in 'The Thin Man' movies. Spying wasn't really their game. They weren't 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith,' who were spies.

Considering the way 'Chuck' has been going with the question of whether Sarah should endanger her life and Chuck's for a romance, the appearance of Willard and Kurtz might be a way to show that two spies can live happily ever after... as opposed to Daniel Shaw who just last week told Sarah that he lost his wife Evelyn, a fellow spy, because they tried to mix business with pleasure.
