NFL Pro and CBS Broadcaster Tom Brookshier Dead at 78

tom_brookshier_philadelphia_eaglesIf you're old enough to remember before the merger between the NFL and the AFL, or if you're a Philly football fan, the name Tom Brookshier is a familiar one for you. Philly fans will remember Tom as a hard-hitting defensive back and part of the 1960 Philadelphia Eagle championship team.

But for the mainstream NFL fan, Tom Brookshier was the sideman to Pat Summerall before John Madden. That was when the NFC was on CBS, and Summerall and Brookshier were the top broadcasting team.

On Friday night, January 29, Tom Brookshier succumbed to cancer at the age of 78. At his hospital bedside when he died were his wife, Barbara, and his partner for so many years, Pat Summerall.

During his playing career, Brookshier was a fan favorite in Philly, a town that appreciates hard-nosed characters and grit. Because of his popularity, after he retired in 1962, he began broadcasting locally and CBS hired him in 1965 to be an analyst on the NFL broadcasts.

He was paired with Summerall, another former player, and the two created a seamless broadcasting team. They had chemistry, with their commentary and play by play flowing naturally. Summerall likened working with Brookie as, "a conversation between two guys in a saloon."

Ironically, because Summerall was so good with Brookshier, CBS paired Pat with John Madden when he was a rookie analyst. Summerall and Madden became a huge success and Madden eventually emerged as an NFL institution.

Brookshier stayed with CBS until 1987, switching from analyst to play by play man. CBS Sports president Sean McManus said of Brookshier, "Tom Brookshier will be missed by his friends, colleagues and admirers. His voice and his style will forever be part of the history of sports television and proudly recognized in the foundation and the future of CBS Sports."

Didn't Brookshier host a prime-time sports/competition show for CBS? (Late 70's... early to mid 80's)

No mention of it on IMDB... but I distinctly remember Brookshier's likeness on CBS prime-time promos, and thinking he had hit the "big time".
