Review: Desperate Housewives - The Glamorous Life

(S06E14) "Stink, stank, stunk." - Lynette to Dr. Graham
Before going on a short hiatus, Desperate Housewives treated us with a so-so episode. This week's episode introduced an almost unrecognizable Julie Benz as stripper Robin (see above), whom Susan takes under her wing; offered us a funnily stinky performance from Frasier's Jane Leeves, which helped Tom and Lynette grow as a couple; put Angie and the Solises at odds as Danny and Ana were ready to take their relationship to the next step; and had the Bree-Orson storyline take a turn that I'm not enjoying at all.
Bree and Orson
If you are a regular reader of my DH reviews, it will be no surprise to you that I hated the way things turned out between Orson and Bree. I don't wish any character's (or real person's) death, but, as I've pointed many times since last season, Orson needs to go. NOW! The writers wrecked his character last season and they are not doing better this season. I've went from a Bree/Orson shipper to despising Orson.
At the beginning of this week's episode, I was glad to see that Orson may be finally written out of the show, as he was getting more and more annoying. Orson's character has changed so much that he makes Bree less interesting and their storylines are some of the worst of the show lately! I'm even finding myself enjoying the Susan storylines better!!!
Sadly for me, Bree saw that she did truly want to give her couple another chance and convinced Orson not to commit suicide. If it weren't for the fact that I review the show for TV Squad, I think I would tape the show and fast forward through the Hodges' upcoming storylines. I have very little faith that the writers will find a way to make Bree and Orson be interesting to watch. They did such a poor job with Orson that it will take a miracle to make him appealing again! Too bad, because I enjoy Kyle MacLachlan as an actor and I think the only way Bree can be an interesting character again is to get rid of Orson.
Ana and Danny
The young couple's storyline was not that original. However, it helped push the Bolens' mystery a bit further. We didn't get any new intel on the Bolen mystery except the "It's what Patrick used to say./We don't talk about Patrick anymore" dialogue between Angie and Nick.
What the Ana-and-Danny-shouldn't-have-sex storyline allowed is for other characters to learn that the Bolens were hiding something. This time, it was Gaby and Carlos' turn to learn that there may be something fishy. From the looks of it, and knowing how Gaby is, I wouldn't be surprised if she discovers the truth.
Ana may be Carlos' niece, but she so resembles Gaby, eh? I'm sure if Gaby were the one who was offered a check to not have sex that she would have accepted it, too, and had sex anyway. I foresee Ana forging Gaby's signature to cash in the money sooner than graduation. Ana is clearly no angel, she doesn't want people telling her what to do, and will surely want the money to buy herself some clothes that she isn't allowed to wear, or gadgets, etc.
Susan and Robin
Susan. Susan. Susan. Once again, Susan acted/talked before thinking. Her actions this week were thoughtful as she tried to help ex-stripper Robin get a better life for herself. However, Susan, once again, didn't see the flaws in her plan before putting things in motion.
Susan is so naive
It's great that she wants to help Robin, but having her move in will only bring troubles. How will the Wisteria Lane residents react to having an ex-stripper live near by? I'm sure the Scavo teens and Danny will love having such a beautiful young woman around! MJ is clearly smitten by Robin, which will more than likely make Susan jealous as he'll start to hang out with her more than with his mom. Plus, even if Mike doesn't seem interested in Robin, he did admit that she was good looking. I wouldn't be surprised if Susan, or other Housewives, think that Robin and Mike have a thing behind Susan's back.
Will Susan ever learn to think things through?
Tom and Lynette
I didn't care much for their first scenes this week because they didn't bring anything new, as both were still complaining about the other. However, things took a fun and "stinky" turn when Tom and Lynette went to Dr. Graham's play! OMG! Jane Leeves was so funny to watch as she portrayed the therapist giving an extremely bad performance as Cleopatra!
I was pleasantly surprised by the turn of events. I expected Tom and Lynette to go back to their therapist and have Lynette admit to Dr. Graham that her performance sucked. However, I never expected the Scavos to have the breakthrough that they had! Wow! It was fantastic to see Tom and Lynette finally be truthful to one another about the good cop/bad cop thing. The Scavos are such a great couple. It will be interesting to see their new dynamic as Tom tries to take on the bad cop role while Lynette sits back and relaxes in the good cop role.
Roy
I may blame the writers for wrecking Orson, but I can admit that they did very good with Roy. I'm sure Orson Bean wasn't set to recur so often, but he is a joy to watch as cynical Roy. They definitely gave Roy the best line of the episode: "At my age, it's just a short-time loan."
Let's hope that we see more of Roy and McCluskey in the future! How about giving them their own storyline?
