Review: '24' - '9:00PM-10:00PM'

24: Season 8, Episode 6

(S08E06) "If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, we don't do that anymore." - Hastings to Jack, on using unsavory methods with the Russians

Oh, snap. The Russians may have bought Renee's cover, but that doesn't mean she's out of danger. Just the opposite, especially given the fact that she's a loose cannon and doesn't seem to care whether she lives or dies at this point. Or maybe that's not necessarily true.

At the beginning of this episode, I wrote in my notes that you just know the relationship she once had with Vladimir will come crashing down eventually. And by the time I got done writing that note, it did. Vlad wants more, and even apologized for treating her badly and trying to rape her one night long ago. "It's good to see you," he said. "You're going to make me start losing sleep again ... you want this just as much as I do."

But Renee is having none of it, which makes me think she's not as tough as she makes herself out to be. If she was, she wouldn't mind cozying up to Vlad in order to stay undercover and keep the mission on track. "I'm going dark," she tells Jack, and takes her bug out. It's really interesting to see the role switch between Jack and Renee. Usually he's the live wire, but now he's in the position of having to look after her.

And that Vlad is some catch, eh? "Look, I was just trying to make things right. You don't have to be such a bitch about it." Way to get the girl. The whole thing is a house of cards.

Meanwhile, Dana is still stressed out over Wade's hold on her. She doesn't seem that far up the food chain at CTU to be able to create a key card and talk him through the security codes to get the impounded drugs out of the warehouse. And .. "I help you do this, and you never call me again," she tells him. "That's the deal." Riiiggghhhttt ...

And the whole situation with Arlo, Chloe and Dana at CTU reminds me so much of the early days of '24,' with Tony, Michelle and Chloe all giving each other the eye at the old CTU. "Oh yeah, I'm jealous," Chloe taunts at Arlo. "Won't you stare at my ass as I walk away?" And of course, he does.

Let's talk about Jack and Ortiz. Jack made no bones about the fact that he's in charge and Oriz better follow his lead. Even though Ortiz has some experience and was involved in a similar operation, Jack knows that one little slip-up can bring the whole operation down. What do you bet that Ortiz will make some bad decision on his own that causes things to fall apart? Fortunately, he had Jack's back tonight.

Jack as a a bespectacled, cigarette-smoking buyer! Don't turn your back on them, Jack! But of course, he was ready for anything, thank goodness.

And what's up with Bazhaev? Josef and Oleg really hit the jackpot with him as a dad, didn't they? "There are rules, Josef, and they must never be broken." Then he pumps several bullets into Oleg's chest. "Never disobey me again," he tells his first-born. Talk about daddy issues.

What did you guys think of this episode?

Frankly is right. Renee is misused. Jack should be more than a human punching bag. He has not had anything to do except get beat up. The lack of respect of the character is beyond the pale. The Dana person is worthless no one cares about her. The writers need fresh people in there. They are out of gas and the show deserves better. The fans are here and they care, get the show right. Chloe should be department head by now.
Dana should have put the clowns in the storage room and set off all the alarms, had them caught, end of story.
Dana is dumbest character 24 has ever had. I will give it two more weeks to correct, and then I give up until next season if there is one.

This "day" is probably the last.
I guess you do run out of great story lines - or - one has a good idea, then kill it with over complicating it to pass it off as great writing. Case in point...last season 24 found a new golden goose in the persona of Renee. People fell for her because of her gradual transformation from a do-goodie idealist to a more realist outlook. There was hope among the following that perhaps a common ground will finally provide Jack with an appropriate companion.
There was such a tremendous open ended storyline in this continuation, but NO...they had to destroy the Renee people fell for, and create a sinister psychopath with a sadistic trait. I LOVED Renee last "day," but hate the character now - so, with nothing to look forward to...see ya!

I officially broke up with 24 halfway through this episode. Between Renee, Chloe, the President, and Starbuck (with Jack following in a car), 24 might as well be a later season of Alias. The plot is boring, and the suspension of disbelief is impossible. Why on earth they did this to what once was a great show? Good bye 24...I'll miss your early seasons.

it´s happening again. People don´t like this season ´cause This season is not like the previous one And it starts criticizing all the details of the series. Ok are you in your right in getting disappointed, but we see the best series of action and espionage of the decade and last night episode was a tense and well narrated episode with a drammatic sacrifice of a undercover agent.

Thank God for DVRs. I'm fast-forwarding through all the non-Jack and Renee scenes. Unless it's a Chloe scene. Her snappy comeback to perv-boy was classic.

Does anyone else have a problem with someone working in a high security level job requiring major clearances having some kind of shady past that has escaped the background checks? I'm gagging on that one every week.

I do!!!!! I've been complaining about that from the very beginning........and........has anyone else noticed that Jack has been getting very little airtime? Is it possible Kiefer Sutherland has gotten tired of being in every single scene - hence all these lame back stories? Hopefully things will heat up soon, but I'm not counting on it. My guess is Jack won't really get into the mix until more than half way through.

This season is wicked lame. I had trouble staying awake every episode this season.

I agree with ML, the two sons won the lottery with their deranged Russian Mob dad. He makes Tony Soprano look nice. And, the 3 lives taken at the clinic was so unnecessary.
Dana (or, Jenny from the block), has certainly reverted quickly back to her old criminal ways. She really thinks he will leave her alone after this? Really? Is she getting her locks changed? I would get him inside and trigger the alarms.
Jack in those black glasses speaking German was hot. Seems like so many negative critiques regarding this season yet we all waited for this show to finally come back. Lots of subplots but they do connect to each other someway. Love the foreign president arresting his valued adviser. He can't be too careful. He doesn't know how far his corruption goes and I think his wife is involved. She is one angry and scorned woman. Lookout!

This season is going no-where. It's hard to watch.

My thought when I heard daddy say "Never disobey me again:"

Or what? You already killed his brother, and there doesn't appear to be any other siblings around to kill. Maybe you can start in on cousins, or pets, or his car. Yeah, that will really make him obey you. At least, until you really need him, and then he says "This is for Oleg."
