Review: 'The Big Bang Theory' - 'The Einstein Approximation'

(S03E14) Look, I'm just going to put this out there. It may be weird, but confused, bedraggled Sheldon is a little bit hot. I've been watching this show for three seasons, and this is the first episode where I was all, "well helloooo, Jim Parsons." It's amazing what a little stubble will do for a dude. Anyhoo, I love the fact that Sheldon got a job this episode. Putting Sheldon in any situation is fantastic, but finding a fairly legitimate reason to make Sheldon a busboy is absolutely golden.

Here's my main problem: Raj. I love Bernadette, and the fact that she and Wolowitz have had a multi-episode relationship, but it kind of leaves Raj out in the cold -- much as he was when his idea to go roller skating turned into a double-date that did not include him. He doesn't necessarily need a girlfriend (although I would like to see that), but they really need to find something to do with him, so he can do more than just show up at the beginning and the end of any given episode.

My favorite part of the entire show seemed to be the writers' favorite part as well, as it was put back into the end of the episode: but Sheldon in the ball pit was hilarious. Having him pop up looking exactly like a whack-a-mole and yelling, "bazinga" is definitely the funniest thing I've seen all day.

This episode didn't move the plot along too much, but it was just 30 minutes of funny lines and great Sheldon action. While I've said before that I don't want BBT to become the Sheldon show, sometimes a half hour of funny lines is all I really need. This episode delivered it in spades.

What I really want to know is what you guys thing of the whole Penny/Leonard thing, now that we're more than halfway through the third season. We spent the first two seasons in anticipation, and the relationships has really had its ups and downs. I'm kind of undecided on it now. One one hand, I kind of like how it's just a comfortable thing in the background, and it's cute how they sleep at each others' apartments. But on the other hand, it's kind of boring. After the quotes, let's have a poll!

Some of my favorite lines from this week:

"Penny, I told you if you don't put him in his crate at night, he just runs around the apartment." - Leonard

Wolowitz: "Have you tried rebooting him?"
Leonard: "No, I think it's a firmware problem."

"I'm a walking, brown, Yelp.com." - Raj

Sheldon: "Your cell phone was off."
Leonard: "Because we didn't want to be disturbed!"
Sheldon: "Well that didn't work out, now did it?"

"One bacon cheeseburger, breaking two Jewish dietary restrictions simultaneously." - Sheldon

"I asked myself, 'what is the most mind-numbing, pedestrian job conceivable,' and three answers came to mind: that of tool booth attendant, Apple store Genius, and what Penny does.' Now, since I don't like touching other peoples' coins, and I refuse to contribute to the devaluation of the word 'genius,' here I am." - Sheldon

What do you think of Leonard and Penny's relationship?
I'm glad they're together. The tension was killing me!339 (35.8%)
It was such a let-down!126 (13.3%)
Eh, it's fine for what it is.483 (50.9%)

I find it hilarious the women here state the Leonard/Penny relationship is 'stale' and 'boring', yet the guys like the fact that it's not drama filled.

Therein lies the problem, women are messed up and for the most part date train wrecks because they are exciting and they think they can CHANGE them...so they want the same in a show. Nice guys...boring

As for no tension, Leonard still is awkward, his asking penny if girls consider Klingon a language and trying to watch football was funny. Then he went off on psychics and they fought.

70% of the audience of Big Bang Theory are geeky guys, the NICE guys that do not get to date the hot women like Penny, because they are too busy bailing their boyfriends out of jail.

So, if we want 0 drama in the relationship paridigm on a show we like, then accept it and zip it, or watch a show geared to romantic drama, where they hate each other, get stuck with one another, fall in love, one screws up, people on the show sleep with each other, then one of them run in slow motion to profess their love. I will throw up. Tedious slop...

As for the person that says Penny and Sheldon will date...oh boy...when that happens, shark LEAP FROGGED and there goes the show.

I have said this before, and will continue to say it - Penny and Leonard are a red herring. Over time, Penny and Sheldon will become close and may even date. (Though Sheldon acts like he has a form of Asperger's, he doesn't - he just cares more about his intellectual pursuits than he does about forming social relationships. Those exist only as he feels they are needed.)

Penny and Leonard are boring, so I agree with everyone who says that. However, for all of Sheldon's idiosyncrasies, we learn a little more about Sheldon's ability to "act normal" on a weekly basis (like the fact that he can cook, knows football, can - and will - go away by himself, etc.) In time, we'll see how all of these elements facilitate a change in Sheldon which, coupled with the time he's spending with Penny (e.g. both having the flu, when she dislocated her shoulder, when he was sick, discussions they have re: her and Leonard's relationship) will come together to create a new relationship between those two. And if the show goes on long enough, I find it perfectly reasonable for the two of them to become best friends or even start dating.

The Leonard and Penny love plot has lost any edge simply because it provides almost no tension.

In the process, Leonard has transformed into "normal" guy (as opposed to mostly awkward Caltech genius #2) and the contrasts he and Penny brought to the show during the first two seasons have in many respects faded.

Those contrasts are what helped to seclude Leonard and Sheldon from any greater sense of "fitting in" that made Penny's role meaningful, early on. Now Leonard and Penny seem like a "normal" couple going through the routine of a "normal" relationship and the awkward social tension, when it exists, is mostly between Penny and Sheldon.

Sheldon, for his part, has maintained a sense of being "outside" due to his lovable, ongoing quirks and lack of interest regarding romance. Sure, Leonard is the "straight man" of the comedy duo, but now he is a little too straight and a lot too normal.

We're not even sure, is Leonard still a physicist? (Sheldon, if you're reading ... that was sarcasm. Admit it, you snorted though.)

I never once thought Leonard and Penny were cute together. I thought, "Wow she suddenly has feelings for him." "Wow, she suddenly wants to not only make out with him, but sleep with him immediately?" "Why are they dating? They don't even have chemistry?" "Why is it when they kiss or flirt I feel physically sick?" They have NO chemistry, they never did, and that is why their relationship will never be more than boring.

And I say that separate of the fact that I feel Sheldon and Penny DO have alot of chemistry. Because even if that never happens, I still wish Leonard/Penny never happened.

I think the situation works with Penny and Leonerd, because it gives an easy reason on why she's always over, which puts her in more scenes (which means more Penny/Sheldon fun) , without having to come up with excuses for her to be at the guys apartment.

Penny went over to their apartment plenty of times before her and Leonard got together; she's not just the girlfriend, she's an actual friend of all four of them, and that should be reason enough.

I think were I in Penny's shoes, we would be sleeping at my apartment. At least Sheldon would not be able to just burst into the room. Besides, it is wonderfully annoying when he pecks on her door while repeatedly calling her name.
I adore this show, and Walowitz is hilarious when he imitates his mother!
This is my favorite show and I am not even close to the age group of this ensemble.

Do we have to have a relationship that has its ups and downs? Isn't it a nice change of pace to actually have a normal relationship?

Put me on the 'need more Raj' train, I miss his lines and delivery. I'm fine with Penny and Leonard as they are as the real comedy comes in Penny's interactions with Sheldon and the romance sets that up well. I too noticed how short this show was, what gives?

Pretty funny episode tonight but to answer the poll question... (since I don't like any of the options)

Leonard and Penny... ahem... (and I'm going to be very eloquent here) ... SUCK! They are probably the worst romantic duo I've ever seen on television. I'm being dead serious when I say that I don't find any of their scenes funny. Ever. I honestly wish they hadn't done this relationship at all. In my opinion, it only hurts the show. That is the option I would have chosen on the poll.

Anyway, otherwise, this episode was funny for the most part. There was a lot of Jim Parsons, which I always love, but I kinda feel like they missed out on a story with Sheldon working at the Cheesecake Factory. It could have been side-splittingly hilarious, instead it settled for a giggle here and there. Oh well.

i agree..... the romantic tension thing works for plots but when the tension is resolved...... it usually is at the end of a series or it essentially, as you state, ruins plot development. oh well. maybe they never expected the long term renewal and now are thinking................... shit.

Guess Who

Not to geek-out here, but the idea that Sheldon wouldn't consider such a rudimentary concept of molecular motion as a wave is laughable. The average viewer of "Mythbusters" likely understands the concept, I'm confident Sheldon would have considered the possibility without a second thought. Even if it were to be argued that his lack of sleep would hamper his cognitive abilities to such a degree - Sheldon would not likely be able to function on any meaningful intellectual level at all - let alone describe in detail the effect a lack of REM sleep has on the brain.

Yes, I know it's just a sitcom, but come on, give us some credit. Good technobabble is hard to come by these days.

Great episode, though one complaint, I downloaded it due to a mishap with my DVR but I looked at the run-time.....18 MINUTES!!! Yes that is without the ending credits but still, how sad is it that advertisers have taken over a third of this episodes 30 minute slot? I love this show but god it's getting crazy. At least 'How I Met Your Mother' got it's 21 minutes. I'm a big British comedy fan and I love how they use at least 25-29 minutes for their episodes. Sadly it's not like that here
