Letterman Show Hires a Female Writer

by Brad Trechak, posted Feb 4th 2010 12:02PM
Oprah and DaveWhen it comes to television comedy, female writers are like diamonds. That is to say they are hard to find and tough enough to crack pavement when properly used. That being said, girl power has given late night television a kick in the crotch with the hiring of Jill Goodwin, who will now be on the writing staff of the 'Late Show with David Letterman.'

Goodwin has been involved with the show since 2001. She got the job the old fashioned way, by rising through the ranks. More power to her. It makes a person wonder when one of the networks will take a chance a have a female-hosted late night talk show. Females seem to dominate the daytime shows (see Oprah), but not at night. The last that I can recall was Joan Rivers way back when.

Given the recent allegations against Dave with regards to his recently admitted affair, it does raise eyebrows with regards to the timing. On the other hand, it's not like she was hired the next day and a lot has happened on late night television since then.

How about Chelsea Handler, whom, if she had a radio show and got into ONE hit movie, could rival Howard Stern as "King/Queen of all Media?*" Her books (plural) sell well, and she has a successful show on E!...just like Stern. I think Handler would be better on the radio, as she seems clunky trying to jam her conversations into segments and bits. Sirius should consider replacing Stern with her, and really drive him crazy.

(*although these days you should really include a website that has some value to claim this title...Stern doesn't, not sure about Handler, but I doubt it and won't bother to look.)

Also, the Wanda Sykes show on Fox.

It takes more than dipping your toes into various forms of media to be the "King" of all media.

I'm not a huge Stern fan by any means, but comparing Chelsea Handler's success, or even potential success to what Stern has done in the radio industry is completely laughable.

And keep in mind Private Parts was based on Stern's life (and book) and did very well at the box office. Chelsea Handler picking up a supporting role in some romantic comedy wouldn't even be a remotely comparable accomplishment.

Seems like you just have a massive hard-on for Chelsea Handler.

"Sirius should consider replacing Stern with her"

get a grip man, I'm not sure what dream world you're living in.

Done.

As Brad reported, "She got the job the old fashioned way."

Maybe, but I admit I only skimmed this article. I think I caught the key words, though: "Letterman" "staff" "rising"..."female writer" "crotch" "involved".

So if Jay Leno was in this situation, you and the rest of the TVsquad mob like Danny Gag would be saying Leno gave a woman the job just to cover his own errors in Judgment.

Since Letterman did it, he is a good guy. Not even MSNBC and FOX kiss up to their respective factions like you fine folks do.
