TLC Puts the Brakes on 'American Chopper'

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 8th 2010 6:29PM
The family reality show that would never say die just died.

TLC has officially canceled the long-running 'American Chopper', which has been on the air since 2003 when it first found footing on the Discovery Channel. The show's final episode will air on Thursday.

Say what you will about the series running past its prime, but both the show and its subjects have been through a hell of a lot of mayhem. The shop played host to a ton of thick, rich drama, capping with the final season in which Paul Jr. leaves the shop on very heated terms and eventually led to Paul Sr. suing his son for a $1 million in back company stock.

If you're curious to know how things will wrap up, check out a preview of the final episode at Turbo.Discovery.com.

TLC should do a show with just Paul Jr. and Mikey--think it's safe to say most of the fans like them and would still like to see what they're up to...

This is like dog bites man. The bigger than life bully gets tossed, I know its bad but I feel good.

Paul Sr. was a miserable SOB whose FU attitude became difficult to watch and I suspect the network just got tired of his act off camera as well as on. If you watched the show you know he was a less than an attentive father, drug abuser and calling his kids or the employees and contractors ungrateful is denying the reality of matters.

Good by Paul Sr. I got tired of your act 2 years ago and now the network has as well.

I hope that TLC or Discovery Channel will remember the appetite the public has for bike-building shows and will create something more true to the business instead of the cartoon-like American Chopper series. This show started out fine and degenerated into all the family disfunctionality and builds centered on non-practical theme bikes. Jesse James started this genre and had a good show until his personal life destroyed his program. There are plenty of excellent bike shops around this country that could do a great show...without the child-like antics of Paul Sr. and the ridiculous egotism of Paul Jr. I hope those guys can afford their mortgages once the lawyer-sharks are done stealing their dough.

WhatI, very good comments, Sr. was always wanting to cut corners, the imagination of AC "custom" built cycles was always Jr. Sr.'s pocket got very big because of what he and Jr. did. But in the end it was Sr. who thought it was all him. Though Sr. says he's been sober for many years, he been drunk about himself for many years. I hope he dies a lonely man. Everybody who treats family that way for the sake of money should.

Paul Sr. lawsuit is just the capper on what was the demise of American Chopper. The last couple of years he has been compromising the quality of the builds (and the show), by doing things progressively cheaper and cheaper, while the revenues were increasing. After getting the BIG new shop/headquarters built, he stopped using outside painters (Nub's shop the latest), bringing the quality down, and then limiting the amount of custom parts (frames, tanks, etc.), choosing to use W.C.C. "production" parts much of the time. Getting rid of Paul Jr. meant getting rid of the elite level of custom bikes being made, as well as a huge expense in paying him. All that just padded pockets of Sr. and if you still watch the show, it's not hard to figure out that his greed has led to all the problems, including the demise of the show.
